Did The Ones Who Live Easter Egg hint at a Morgan Jones appearance?
By Renee Hansen
During his final episode of Fear the Walking Dead, Morgan Jones (Lennie James) buries Grace (Karen David) next to his old pal Eastman (John Carroll Lynch). He then tells his daughter Mo ( Zoey Merchant) that they will search for his friend, "the one who told me not to run." This, of course, was Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).
This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live season 1, episode 1, "Years."
Fans believed that Morgan's statement and radio call, a call back to the early days of TWD, signified that he would not only crossover to The Ones Who Live but also be the one to find Rick. The first episode of The Ones Who Live squashed that hope as Michonne was seen to be the one to find Rick. But there was an object that briefly appeared that could be a clue foreshadowing Morgan's appearance in this spinoff.
During the scene involving Lt. Col. Okafor (Craig Tate), Pearl Thorne (Lesley-Ann Bradt), and Rick, when Okafor tells them of the A & B designations and more secrets, he hands them each a stack of books. On top is the book The Art of Peace by Morihei Ueshiba, translated by John Stevens. This should be familiar to fans of the main series as Morgan was given a copy from his friend Eastman in the season 6 episode "Here's Not Here."
This could just be a nod to Rick's longtime friendship with Morgan, honoring all they endured since the pilot episode of The Walking Dead. Regardless of the reason, it was a cool Easter Egg.
After his final appearance in Fear TWD, James did make an interesting comment to Comicbook regarding Morgan appearing in another spinoff.
""In all honesty, every and anything is possible. And I know it’s something that a certain percentage of our fans would like. I would show up to work with Andy again any time. But anybody who knows me knows I’m fiercely protective of Morgan’s story. And as far as I’m concerned, at this particular moment in time, this is the end of the road for Morgan. You’ll only see him again if a story comes up within the universe that is just too good to say no to.""
- Lennie James
Perhaps The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live was that role? Only time will tell.
