Fear the Walking Dead concluded its eight-season run in 2022, but Garret Dillahunt, who played John Dorie, was killed off in season 6, and Ray McKinnon, who played Proctor John, was never heard of again. Both actors will star in the upcoming western The Dead Don't Hurt, written, directed, produced, composed by, and starring Viggo Mortensen.
The story is set in the 1860s and tells of the independent French Canadian flower seller, Vivienne Le Coudy, played by Vicky Krieps. She breaks societal norms when she forms a non-dependent relationship with Danish immigrant carpenter Holger Olsen, played by Mortensen. They meet in San Francisco and move near Elk Flats, where his home is located. When Holger joined the Civil War to fight with the Union, Vivienne is left to her own devices as she goes against the corrupt Mayor Rudolph Schiller (Danny Huston), his powerful business partner, rancher Alfred Jeffries (Garret Dillahunt), and his violent son Weston (Solly McLeod).
The Dead Don't Hurt, a Western love story, began filming in Canada in October 2022. The movie recently premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and other festivals where Krieps has been praised for her performance, proclaiming her the "central force" of the movie. The official release date has yet to be announced.
The film is a Talipot Studio, Recorded Picture, and Perceval Pictures production, produced by Regina Solórzano, Jeremy Thomas, and Mortensen.
