The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will return to AMC and AMC+ this fall for its second season. Subtitled The Book of Carol, season two will feature the return of Carol Peletier, portrayed by Melissa McBride, since season 1 of the main series. McBride was on hand at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) to discuss her return after her season 1 cameo appearance in the Daryl Dixon series.

During the final scene of The Walking Dead's series finale, "Rest in Peace," Daryl (Norman Reedus) tells Carol, "It's not like we are ever going to see each other again." Daryl and Carol have long been best friends, forming a bond through shared trauma and more. It's believed that nothing in this world could keep them apart forever and this theory is to be tested in the upcoming season of the Daryl Dixon spinoff.

When Daryl departed the Commonwealth at the end of the main series, his objective was to search for others who could be welcomed into the community. The first season of Daryl Dixon revealed a radio conversation with Carol in which he tells her he is in Maine and should return within a week. But viewers of his series know he was thrown onto a ship bound for France. It was no surprise when, at the end of the season, Carol was seen searching for Daryl in his last known location.

During an interview at the Variety Studio, presented by Google TV event at SDCC, McBride said this about the bond between the two characters.

"The relationship they have — she can feel it. Something doesn’t feel right. It’s like a premonition… It’s a bond that’s a tangible, cosmic sort of bond. I think that she is concerned about where her friend is. When things get quiet, things get stirred, so she’s on a mission to find her friend for several reasons."

She reassures fans that it will be a great journey, but the long-awaited reunion between Carol and Daryl doesn't take that long. This is fabulous news for the characters' fans, as they have missed McBride's presence in the universe.

During the Daryl Dixon panel hosted by Chris Hardwick at SDCC, McBride shared that fans can expect many shades of Carol in the upcoming season. She also talks about newcomer Ash, portrayed by Manish Dayal.

Hardwick praised McBride for her dedication to TWD Universe and asked her about Carol's return. The actress seems to be very excited to re-explore the character and have fans follow her on this new journey.

The official SDCC trailer for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon - The Book of Carol gives more insight as to what viewers can expect in the upcoming season which premieres on AMC and AMC+ on September 29.
