Melissa McBride will return to The Walking Dead universe in the upcoming second season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which has added the subtitle The Book of Carol. McBride reprised her role as Carol in the first season of the spinoff, which set up her storyline for the next season. What happened to Carol at the end of the main series?

AMC aired the final episode of The Walking Dead, "Rest in Piece," in November 2022. This episode concluded many characters' storylines while also setting up the continuation of others. The resistance had overthrown the Commonwealth, and Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Mercer (Michael James Shaw) became the leaders of the community.

When the residents of Alexandria were relocated to the Commonwealth, Carol, in another one of her schemes, sided up with Deputy Governer Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton). This, of course, was to benefit her community. She did what Carol does best and was integral in the fall of the Commonwealth government.

The Book of Carol - Carol's story continues

One year after the Commonwealth was over taken, Carol and Daryl visited a rebuilt Alexandria that is now thriving. They visit the memorial wall and remember all who have been lost along the way. They also visit Hilltop, which is also being rebult.

Carol and Daryl sit beside the river as they discuss Daryl leaving the communities, and although they are saddened that he is going, both believe it will be good for them. Daryl tells her he is proud of her as she has taken up Hornsby's old job and is making things better for all of them. Carol becomes emotional, to which Daryl reminds her that they will see each other again.

As Daryl prepares to leave, he says his goodbyes to Ezekiel, R.J. (Antony Azur), and Judith (Cailey Fleming), who reminds him that he deserves a happy ending also. He hugs Carol, saying they love each other before Daryl leaves the Commonwealth bound for his new journey.

In the fifth episode of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, a flashback scene reveals Daryl contacting Carol via radio. He tells her he is along the coast of Maine and will return to the Commonwealth in a week. Carol, whose voice reveals her distress, attempts to tell Daryl of someone or something that has returned. The connection is lost before she relays the details.
