Paramount+ Landman series official trailer, Walking Dead alum Alez Meraz stars
By Renee Hansen
Landman is a 10-part series airing on Paramount+ from the mind of Oscar nominee Taylor Sheridan based on Christian Wallace's Boomtown podcast. The first two episodes of the series premieres on the streamer on November 17, followed by additional episodes weekly on Sundays.
The series is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios, and Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch Productions exclusively for Paramount+. Landman is added to Sheridan's long list of titles for Paramount+, including 1923, 1883, Lioness, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Lawmen: Bass Reeves.
Set in a West Texas boomtown, Landman is set in the modern age and follows fortune seekers in the oil rigging world. The story is inspired by the 11-part podcast from Imperative Entertainment and Texas Monthly, Boomtown. The series is described as an upstairs/downstairs story that looks at both sides of the industry, the lives of the roughnecks, and the wildcat billionaires who will reshape the climate, economy, and geopolitics with their latest boom.
The series is led by Oscar-winner Billy Bob Thornton, who also worked with Sheridan in 1883, as Tommy Norris, a crisis exec at an oil company. Ali Larter (The Last Victim) plays his ex-wife Angela and his 17-year-old, strong-willed daughter Ainsley is portrayed by Michelle Randolph (1923).
Additional cast includes Jacob Lofland (Joker 2), Kayla Wallace (When Calls the Heart), James Jordan (Yellowstone), Mark Collie (Nashville), Paulina Chávez (The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia), and Golden Globe nominee Demi Moore (Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans). Emmy Award-winning Jon Hamm (Mad Men) appears in a recurring guest role as Monty Miler, a titan of the Texas oil industry, with Andy Garcia (Expendables franchise) and Michael Peña (End of Watch), who also appear in guest roles.
The official trailer for Landman reveals a broad look at the oil industry in an outstanding display of cinematography. Key players are shown in their elements, wining and dining, while the other side of the story, the lives of the rig workers, shows just how dangerous the job is. Thornton's character's narration says it all: "Getting oil out of the ground's the most dangerous job in the world."
Meraz shared news that the series wrapped in June with in several BTS images including photos with Thornton and his transformation in the makeup chair. More recently, he posted the trailer with the caption, "So incredibly proud to be a part of this."
Below is an image of Meraz as Carver, a member of the Reapers in the eleventh and final season of The Walking Dead. Carver was a brutal and cocky member of the group who become Leah's (Lynn Collins) number 2, after she took control. He met his end at the hands of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) who killed many of the Reapers in act of revenge for all the harm they caused her group, the Wardens.
Meraz is well known for his role as Paul Lahote, a werewolf, in the Twilight series of films. He also starred in The New World, his first big role, where he portrayed a Powhatan warrior in a movie inspired by Captain John Smith, Pocahontas of the Powhatan tribe, and Englishman John Rolfe.
Next, Meraz will appear in Jeremy Torrie's Many Wounds, a movie that reimages the 1994 film Once Were Warriors. He has also been announced for season 3 of AMC's psychological thriller Dark Winds.
