Should The Walking Dead spinoffs converge for season 12 of the series?
By Renee Hansen
AMC has done an outstanding job of furthering The Walking Dead universe with several spinoff series. Many have asked why the franchise continues producing spinoffs instead of continuing the main series. This is answered by viewership of the two latest spinoffs, Dead City and Daryl Dixon. Both set viewership records on AMC Networks streamer, AMC+. Fans want to see more of their favorite characters but the stories became too thin because of the enormous cast.
Ending the main series was a smart move by AMC because viewers love to see more within TWDU, but it was difficult to give the stories substance with the massive number of characters featured in the final season. Spinoffs allow focused storylines and give a fresh take on the apocalypse by featuring new locations and a much smaller cast.
Is there going to be a season 12 of The Walking Dead?
In October 2023, Comicbook.com reported that TWDU chief content officer Scott M. Gimple discussed another season of the series at New York Comic Con. Gimple stated that while another season isn't planned, he wouldn't be opposed to the spinoffs converging in some way.
"That isn't specifically planned. It would be good, though, to see," Gimple said of a three-way crossover. "The dream would be that these shows somehow converge in some way, narratively." On bringing The Walking Dead flagship back to life for a season 12, Gimple added: "I'm not against it."

But the question remains: SHOULD The Walking Dead spinoffs come full circle and reunite the characters in season 12? With the success of the newest spinoffs, which feature Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Negan (Jeffery Dean Morgan), and Daryl (Norman Reedus), it seems that viewers are more interested in stories that provide more focused attention to specific characters. Both of these series have been renewed for a second season, with Melissa McBride joining the Daryl Dixon series.
The highly anticipated The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will feature the return of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) and is expected to be another fantastic story. It will be interesting to see viewership numbers for this series as fans have longed for Rick and Michonne's return. This series debuts on AMC and AMC+ on February 25, 2024.
