The Ones Who Live at its heart is a love story centered around Rick Grimes (Lincoln) and his wife Michonne (Danai Gurira), whose circumstances have kept them apart for years. Rick was rescued by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) and taken to the CRM, where he has been held captive. Michonne, believing Rick died, carried on without him raising their daughter Judith and son RJ, of whom Rick has no knowledge. When she discovered clues of his survival, she, with the wholehearted approval of Judith, set out in search of her true love.

The episode also featured beautiful dream sequences that showed what their relaitonship could have been if the outbreak never occured while also reminding viewers of the deep love they share.

The years have been hard on Rick so much so that he has not only tried to escape numerous times but has even thought of ending his life. The first episode filled in some of the blanks of his story from the time he left The Walking Dead in season 9 until now.

Fans have been eager to see Rick and Michonne's reunion for years and were rewarded in the final scene of episode 1 of The Ones Who Live.

Rick and Michonne breathing the same air

Lincon's comment about the pair breathing the same air again really hit me. It was a beautiful way to word the reunion between them. The scene only allowed a brief glimpse of them together, with looks of shock and disbelief evident on their faces.

The second episode, "Gone," will likely feature Michonne's journey to that exact point in time, where fans are hopeful to see more of this long-awaited reuniting of The Walking Dead's powerhouse couple of Rick and Michonne.
