The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live premiere episode was a fantastic introduction to the series, which features the long-awaited return of Rick and Michonne.

The article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Episode 1, "Years."

The first The Ones Who Live episode, titled "Years," of which the episode's teleplay was written by Scott Gimple, from a story by Gimple, Danai Gurira & Andrew Lincoln and directed by Bert & Bertie. It was an outstanding start to the story, which at its heart is a love story.

The Ones Who Live shocking moments

The first episode featured many moments that were a shock to viewers. Here are some of the best.

Rick's arm

If you were able to avoid spoilers, the scene of Rick cutting off his hand came as quite a shock. He was a man willing to do anything to make his way back to his wife and child (plus a child he is unaware of), and this was what he thought he had to do. Sadly, he was caught again, or not so sadly, as it saved his life, and he was given a badass prosthetic arm complete with a retractable knife.

Oakafor's history

Okafor (Craig Tate) saw Rick Grimes for what he was: a leader. He chose him to join the CRM, believing he would help make the world a better place. He confided in Rick that he was involved in the bombing of Atlanta and Los Angeles soon after the outbreak and was en route to do the same to Philadelphia, where the Civic Republic is now located. He opted to take the moral high ground by instead bombing the 4,000 marines, which included his wife.

Thorne saves Rick

Pearl Thorne (Lesley-Ann Brandt) is a South African military woman who is very good at what she does. When Rick attempts his fifth escape, she saves him instead of killing him. When he tries to escape via the manhole, she doesn't shoot him but makes him return with her. Okafor also chose her for leadership, and she knows deep down Rick is a good man. What's her end game?

Okafor is killed

This one ticked me off. I loved his character and felt he, Rick, and Thorne would have made an excellent team to make significant changes. They have all faced hell and returned; Thorne eloquently said, " We all want to be somewhere else, with someone else, but got stuck in the right place." It was a pretty cool scene despite Okafor's death.

RICK AND MICHONNE

I didn't think we would see this glorious moment of Rick and Michonne together until possibly episode 3. Even though no words were spoken, their eyes said volumes. Just seeing and knowing that they will reunite is enough to make this episode unforgettable.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live returns on Sunday, March 3, with episode 2, "Gone." From the teaser for this episode, it appears viewers will get more information on Michonne's journey.
