Walking Dead and Color Purple actor Corey Hawkins lands lead role in new movie

Deadline reports that Walking Dead and The Color Purple actor Corey Hawkins has secured his next role. The Man in My Basement will be financed by Andscape, the Black-led content studio of Disney and ESPN.
Nadia Latif directs in their feature directorial debut in the film, which also stars four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe. The Man in My Basement is an adaptation of the novel by Walter Mosley. Hawkins will also serve as an executive producer on the film.
Charles Blakey (Hawkins) resides in the African-American neighborhood of Sag Harbor. Out of work, out of luck, and close to losing his ancestral home, he receives a proposition from a mysterious businessman, Anniston Bennet (Defoe), to rent his basement for the summer in return for enough money to clear his debts. After accepting the offer, Charles travels a horrifying path that leads him to confront his family's ghosts and locks the men in a terrifying puzzle fueled by race, the source of the trauma and root of all evil.
Corey Hawkins recent roles
Most recently, Hawkins stars in the SAG Award-nominated The Color Purple with fellow TWDU actor Colman Domingo. He also starred in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a movie that focuses on one chapter of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
The actor received his second Tony nominatation for his performance on Broadway in Top Dog/Underdog.
Hawkins will also star in The Piano Lesson, set in the Great Depression, that follows the Doaker Charles family and their most prized family heirloom, a piano which is decorated with carvings from an enslaved ancestor.
