Walking Dead's Eastman, John Carroll Lynch cast in Prime Video's Bosch spinoff
By Renee Hansen
Deadline reports that actor John Carroll Lynch has been cast in his next role. He will star alongside Maggie Q in the Bosch spinoff, an untitled Renee Ballard series for Prime Video.
The new spinoff is spawned from Bosch, the original series created for Amazon by Eric Overmyer that premiered in 2014. Inspired by the police procedural novel series by Michael Connelly that follows detective Harry Bosch, portrayed by Titus Welliver, the first series aired for seven seasons. This was followed by the first spinoff, Bosch: Legacy, described as "essentially Bosch season 8." The first spinoff has been renewed for a third season.
The latest installment in the Bosch series of shows was announced by Amazon in 2023. This series will focus on detective Renee Ballard (Maggie Q), a character based on the real-life detective Mitzi Roberts. She was introduced in season 3 of Bosch: Legacy and in the 2017 novel The Late Show by Connelly, who will executive produce the series. This will be the first series in Amazon's Bosch story not led by Welliver.
Ballard is in charge of the Los Angeles Police Department's new cold case division, which is poorly funded. She and her all-volunteer unit are responsible for the largest caseload in the city, which is comprised of frozen-in-time cases that they approach with empathy and determination. She will turn to the now-retired Harry Bosch as she navigates dangers and threats against herself and her team.
Lynch has been cast as retired Thomas Laffont, a former partner of Ballard's who returns to assist her leadership in the department. A kind man, Laffont serves as a rock for Ballard with his knowledge as a crack interrogator and experience as a seasoned detective.
In addition to Q and Lynch, the series will also star Courtney Taylor as Samira, a member of the cold case team.
The 10-part untitled Renee Ballard series will air on Prime Video.
John Carroll Lynch - Evil series
Lynch portrayed Eastman in season 6 of The Walking Dead. He served as mentor and eventually friend of Morgan Jones (Lennie James) in the season 6 episode "Here's Not Here." In addition to his new role in the Renee Ballard series, Lynch will also guest star in the final season of Paramount's supernatural drama Evil.
The 10-part fourth season of Evil premiered in May and was announced as the final. Creators were then given four bonus episodes, a mini fifth season, to conclude the story. These episodes will follow the season 4 finale, which aired on July 25. The four remaining episodes to close out the story will air on Thursdays in August.
Lynch was cast as Henry Stick, the attorney who was assigned to Leland Townsend (Michael Emerson). He is described as bumbling and barely competent, but luckily for his client, he possesses a greater hidden power.
Next, Lynch will appear in the Targon Egerton led She Rides Shotgun, a thriller based on Jordan Harper's novel. You can also see him in Babes, a comedy that is the directorial debut of Pamela Adlon. The movie stars Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau as lifelong friends who explore the challenges of adulthood and parenting. This movie is available on VOD on Prime Video.
