Award-winning actress Samantha Morton portrayed the villain Alpha in seasons 9 and 10 of The Walking Dead. Morton did an exceptional job portraying the leader of the Whispers and reprised the role in episode 3 of the Tales of the Walking Dead spinoff, which served as the character's origin story. Most recently, Morton can be seen as Catherine de Medici in the Starz period drama The Serpent Queen.

The second season of The Serpent Queen premiered on Starz beginning July 12, 2024. Created by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road), the series was inspired by Leonie Frieda's 2004 nonfiction work, Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France. The wildly popular series ranks 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics praise Morton's performance.

Many other cast members returned for the second season, including Danny Kirrane, Ray Panthaki, Raza Jaffrey, Enzo Cilenti, Amrita Acharia, Ruby Bentall, Beth Goddard, Ludivine Sagnier, Nicholas Burns, and Rupert Everett. Minnie Driver joined the second season as Elizabeth I and Catherine's maid Rahima was potrayed by Emma McDonald, a role previously played by Sennia Nanua.

Additionally Angus Imrie, Stanley Morgan, and Philippine Velge were added as series regulars, with Rosalie Craig, Isobel Jesper Jones, Bill Milner, Ashley Thomas, and Alexandre Willaume in recurring roles.

The first eight-part season, which premiered on September 11, 2022, began when Catherine was a 14 year-old bride who married into the French Valois court. The story transitioned from past events to the present, with Liv Hill portraying the younger version of Catherine. The story chronicles Catherine's challenges with a husband who is love with an older woman, an unpaid dowry, and discovers she is, at first, unable to conceive a child, which during that time was a primary duty of a wife. She is high intelligent woman with resolute determination who becomes one of the most influential women to don a crown.

On August 30, Starz premiered the season 2 finale episode, "All Saints Day." Morton celebrated the second season with a social media post featuring some amazing BTS photos and a short clip.

Fans are hopeful that The Serpent Queen will be renewed for a third season but nothing has been announced yet.
