Where does Tales of the Walking Dead fit in The Walking Dead universe?
By Renee Hansen
Tales of the Walking Dead is the third spinoff of The Walking Dead, which is told in an anthology format. Each of the six episodes is independent of the others, with new characters in a different setting at different times after the outbreak. The stories are within the same world as the flagship series but expand the universe.
This series is unique as it introduces new characters in each episode in a story that takes place during different times in the undead apocalypse. Below, we break down each episode and explain its timeline and where it fits within TWDU.
101 – “Evie/Joe”
Starring -Terry Crews and Olivia Munn
Directed by – Ron Underwood
Written by – Ben Sokolowski, Maya Goldsmith
The first episode of Tales of TWD is set about one year after the outbreak, which is after events of season 3 of the main series. This story features a prepper and a woman he meets during his journey to locate a female prepper from his past.
102- “Blair/Gina”
Starring – Parker Posey and Jillian Bell
Directed by – Michael Satrazemis
Written by – Kari Drake
The second episode of this series is set at the beginning of the outbreak when people are trying to understand what is taking place. It is a reality-bending buddy heist story in which a hypercritical boss and her disgruntled receptionist must work together to escape Atlanta, a city being overrun by the undead.
103- “Dee”
Starring – Samantha Morton, Scarlett Blum, and Lauren Glazier
Directed by – Michael Satrazemis
Written by – Channing Powell
This is the only episode of Tales of TWD which features a character first introduced in the main series. Going by Lydia's age (turning 10, and she was 6 in flashbacks on TWD), this episode takes place at approximately the fourth year of the apocalypse. This episode is an origin story of Dee, later known as Alpha, leader of the Whisperers, that reveals new information about this character.
104- “Amy/Dr. Everett”
Starring – Anthony Edwards and Poppy Liu
Directed by – Haifaa al-Mansour
Written by – Ahmadu Garba
Showrunner Channing Powell stated that one episode of the series is set 30 years after the outbreak, and many believe it is this one. Set in what is known as the "dead sector," a tri-point along the Chattahoochee River where Georgia, Florida, and Alabama meet, the story follows Dr. Everett, a man who has spent the last decade in voluntary isolation studying walkers.
105- “Davon”
Starring – Jessie T. Usher, Embeth Davidtz, and Loan Chabanol
Directed by – Michael Satrazemis
Written by – Channing Powell
"Davon" is an episode that is a noir-ish twisted memory thriller. According to an interview with Embeth Davidtz, who stars, this is set about 15 years after the outbreak. A man comes to a town with no memory of how he arrived and then pieces together the bits he remembers to discover why he is being accused of murder.
106- “La Doña”
Starring – Danny Ramirez and Daniella Pineda
Directed by – Deborah Kampmeier
Written by – Lindsey Villarreal
There are no clues to indicate when this supernatural story takes place. Although set in the apocalypse, this story is more of a psychological horror than post-apocalyptic. The episode is a trippy story where it is unclear if the characters have been trapped in a haunted house or if the occurrences are only in their minds.
In 2023, AMC announced a new short form series titled, More Tales of the Walking Dead, an additon to the growing list of spinoff of TWD. Little was revealed at that time and nothing has been heard about the fate of this series since.
