Walking Dead Torn Apart webisode tells the story of Hannah, the bicycle girl walker
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead universe consists of many series, comics, games, and more. One interesting and often overlooked area within TWDU is the webisodes which are connected to the stories told in the main series and Fear the Walking Dead. The webisodes are short video clips that expand the storylines of characters featured in the series. The Walking Dead Webisodes: Torn Apart features Hannah's (Lilli Birdsell) story, a woman who would become the first walker encountered by Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).
Torn Apart is a six-part webisode written by John Esposito and directed by Greg Nicotero, known for his SFX throughout TWDU. Set in King County, Georgia, the story takes place ahead of the events of season 1 of The Walking Dead. The cast for this set of videos includes Birdsell, Rick Otto, Madison Leisle, Griffin Cleveland, Danielle Burgio, and Rex Maynard Linn.
This story tells of Hannah, a protective mother of two, who wakes up after a violent car crash to discover that both her children are missing. This begins her frantic search for her children as she tries to make sense of what is happening with the creatures who are trying to attack.
Hannah's story ends tragically, as seen in The Walking Dead, when Rick, freshly awakened from his coma, encounters her. He is taken aback by the sight of a half-woman, severely decayed, crawling towards him. At that point in his story, he had yet to be informed about what happened while he was in the coma.

Walking Dead Bicycle Walker
The Walker version of Hannah is portrayed by Melissa Cowan in the pilot episode of The Walking Dead, "Days Gone Bye." She is the first walker Rick encounters after leaving the hospital. He discovers a bike in a park, and to his shock, what he believes to be a corpse begins moving and reaching out to him. Later in the story, after learning about the walkers, Rick returns to the park, tells Hannah, "I'm sorry this happened to you," and then shoots her in the head to end her misery.
The bicycle walker was created by Greg Nicotero and his KNB EFX group. You can view great BTS images of the creation of the bicycle walker and more on the KNB website.
