What happened to RJ, Rick and Michonne's son, in The Walking Dead?
By Renee Hansen
Actor Antony Azor has portrayed Rick "RJ" Grimes Jr. since season 9 of The Walking Dead. The young boy is the son of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) and brother to Judith (Cailey Fleming). One thing about RJ is that his father is unaware of his existence.
In season 9 of The Walking Dead, Rick cheated death during a bridge explosion but is thought to have died by his family and friends. This event occured before Michonne knew she was pregnant, or at least before sharing the news with Rick. Years have passed, and Rick has returned in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live spinoff, but he still has no idea he has a son.
His sister Judith made sure that RJ knew the story of their father's bravery in a story about The Brave Man. She tells him that "He died and went to heaven" when he blew up the bridge to keep them safe. This later prompts the boy to choose Little Brave Man for his codename.
During the penultimate episode of the series "Family," Judith passes the Grimes family torch, her father's hat, to her brother, as it was passed to her by her older brother Carl (Chandler Riggs).
RJ was seen throughout the remaining season of The Walking Dead, growing up and doing kid things with the other young survivors. He was well trained by his sister in the art of combat, at least as well trained as a young boy can but. But like, Judith and their brother Carl before them, RJ will grow up in the world and learn to make his way.
Azor got to meet Riggs during the series finale episode of The Walking Dead.
Will RJ and Judith ever be reunited with their parents? Viewers are hopeful that this is a scene that will be featured in the Rick and Michonne spinoff, The Ones Who Live.
