What is the point of Tales of the Walking Dead?

AMC has produced several spinoff series set in the same world as The Walking Dead. Some of these stories feature established characters while others feature new ones.

In AMC's long list of spinoffs of The Walking Dead, one stands out as it showcases individual stories not tied to the main series. Tales of the Walking Dead premiered on AMC and AMC+ in the summer of 2022. While many viewers have been vocal about not enjoying this series, it is definitely worth the watch.

Tales of TWD consists of six episodes; each one introduces new characters, except one featuring a familiar face, with stories set across different parts of the United States during different times after the outbreak. One story takes place 30 years after the world fell apart.

When the series was first announced, it was presented as a series that would introduce some new characters but also chronicle other side stories of characters established in the main series. In the first season, only one actor reprised her Walking Dead role for this series. Samantha Morton would once again become Alpha, but this was before her reign of terror as the leader of the Whisperers when she was known as Dee. It is unclear why only one familiar character was featured but perhaps this is due to the fact that The Walking Dead had yet to air its final episode.

The point of this series was created to expand The Walking Dead universe with new characters, new locations, and take a look at how differently people dealt with the apocalypse. I really enjoyed most of the episodes and believe if the series didn't have Walking Dead in the title, more people wouldn't expect it to be anything like the main series.

Another great element to this anthology series is that anyone who enjoys apocolyptic-themed shows can watch it, even if they have never watched one episode of The Walking Dead. And the episodes can be watched in any order as they aren't tied to one another.
