When was Thora Birch in The Walking Dead and what happened to her?
By Renee Hansen
Actress, producer, and director Thora Birch is well known for many roles, including Hocus Pocus, Patriot Games, Monkey Trouble, Now and Then, and more. She also portrayed a character named Mary, aka Gamma, in season 10 of The Walking Dead. What happened to her character in the series?
Mary was a member of Alpha's (Samantha Morton) Whisperers during season 10. She was cunning, ruthless, and loyal, characteristics that were displayed when she fed her sister, Frances (Juliet Brett), to a horde of walkers to protect the leader of the Whisperers. She appeared to be a great fit within the group, which earned her the name Gamma, indicating her rank after Alpha and Beta (Ryan Hurst).
She eventually betrayed the Whisperers to learn about her sister's son, Adam, who was taken in by the Hilltop Colony. Upon discovering Alpha's lie about Lydia's (Cassady McClincy) death, Mary suffers a breakdown. She then made an arrangement with Aaron (Ross Marquand) to exchange intel on the Whisperers for information about her nephew. It is during this time that her softer side is revealed.
Before her death, Mary expressed remorse regarding her sister's death and showed a kinder side, sacrificing herself to save Alden, Kelly, and Adam. She led away a group of walkers and killed them to save the others. She then encountered Beta, who brutally killed her and intended to bring her into the Whisperer's horde. After she reanimates, Alden mercifully shoots her in the head with an arrow.
