Negan was introduced during the finale of season 6 of The Walking Dead as one of the most memorable entrances of a character. Clad in his iconic leather jacket and red scarf welding his favorite weapon, Lucille, a barbed wire-wrapped bat, he made quite an impression as Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his group awaited their fates. Over time, Negan, portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, experienced the loss of his Saviors and the Sanctuary and much more, which eventually led to his redemption arc.

In the eleventh and final season of The Walking Dead, Negan married a woman named Annie (Medina Senghore), who was part of a group called Riverside. After the fall of the Commonwealth, Negan took pregnant Annie away to live on their own.

The next time viewers see Negan is in the first season of The Walking Dead: Dead City. It is revealed that Negan found himself wanted by the New Babylon law, for killing some men who attacked Annie, so he sent Annie and their son Joshua to Missouri. No other details of why he didn't join them or why Missouri was the chosen destination was shared.

In season 1 of Dead City, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) is in dire need of the assistance of her long-time enemy, Negan. When she finds him, she discovers he has taken in a girl named Ginny (Mahine Napoleon), who lost her parents. Maggie needs Negan to help her rescue her son Hershel (Logan Kim), who has been abducted by one of Negan's former Saviors, The Croat (Željko Ivanek). Maggie betrays Negan, trading him for her son's release.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan will return as Negan in the second season of Dead City, which began filming in early April. His fate was left in the air at the conclusion of the first season, but with threats of more harm to Hershel, Negan will likely follow the Dama's plans until he can find a way out.

Will this see the return of old Negan? The one who reigned terror over his followers? The one who reappeared in the second episode of Dead City when he told this awful joke:

"Knock knock."
"Who's there?"
"Butter"
"Butter who?"
"Well, you butter get out your umbrellas because it is about to goddamn rain!"

This occured when the Burazi attacked the Tribespeople, and Negan diverted their attention by holding a knife to one of their member's throats, telling a joke, slitting his throat, disemboweling him, and throwing him off the balcony. DANG!!! Negan's monster came out!

Earlier in the episode, he told Maggie that "I was only a monster when I had to be," and this was an instance when the Saviors' leader was needed. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Morgan shared his excitement about playing out this scene.

It will be exciting to see what's coming for Negan in The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2.
