AMC began development of the first direct spinoff of The Walking Dead in March 2022. The original title was announced as Isle of the Dead and would be renamed in August 2022 to The Walking Dead: Dead City. The series premiered on AMC and AMC+ on June 18, 2023, with a six-part season. Has the show been renewed?
Dead City is the continuation of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) stories, which takes place several years after the conclusion of the flagship series. During the final conversation between the long-time enemies, Maggie admits that Negan and his wife, Annie (Medina Senghore), have earned their place among the communities, but no matter what, she can't forgive him for what he did to her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun). Negan and his expectant wife leave the communities as he feels he will always be looking over his shoulder.
Season 1 of Dead City picks up several years later when Maggie, now living at a place called the Bricks, finds herself in need of Negan's assistance to rescue her son Hershel (Logan Kim), who has been abducted and taken to the island of Manhattan. The entire season centers on the duo as they navigate post-apocalyptic Manhattan and the criminal elements that inhabit it.
AMC has renewed Dead City for a second 8-part season that will premiere on AMC and AMC+ on May 4.
What is season 2 of Dead City about?

In May, AMC will premiere the exciting new season of the Maggie and Negan spinoff, which pits the characters on opposite sides of the battle for power in Manhattan.
Season 2 synopsis: In the growing war for control of New York City, Maggie and Negan find themselves trapped on opposite sides. As their paths intertwine, they come to see that the way out for both is more complicated and harrowing than they ever imagined.
The season finale of season 1 set up several stories that will be featured in the new season. Negan is blackmailed by the Dama (Lisa Emery), a powerful gang leader in NYC, to assist her in taking control of the island. Maggie, who already has her hands full raising two emotional teens, her son Hershel and a young orphan Ginny (Mahina Napoleon), will also become involved in the events in Manhattan.
AMC has released the opening minutes of Dead City season 2 (watch below), which features a look at the undead being harvested to use as fuel to power the city. As Negan states in a teaser for the season, "You see, power is power."
The second season will see several returning cast members, including Gaius Charles, Željko Ivanek, Mahina Napoleon, Logan Kim, and Lisa Emery. Newly cast for this season are Kim Coates (American Primeval, Sons of Anarchy), Dascha Polanco (Orange Is the New Black), Jake Weary (It Follows), Keir Gilchrist (It's Kind of a Funny Story), and Pooya Mohseni (Madam Secretary).
