Walking Dead fans are ready for the returns of Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier. The fan-favorite double act will be back on screens in the very near-future when The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 premieres on both AMC and AMC+ this September. As we've all come to expect from the TWD Universe by now, new threats, locations, and walkers will await them.
Daryl and Carol have been battling all of the threats that this world can throw at them for years now, but they aren't known for backing down. Heck, one of them survived an unplanned trip to France while the other one used every bit of resilience and cunning that she has to make her way from the US to Europe in search of him. It goes without saying that they're prepared for their next adventure in the show's upcoming season.
But it sounds like Daryl's next offering will be something of a reboot for the show.
Melissa McBride reveals that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 will see the story start over
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will be pressing the reset button in its third season as the show starts over in multiple new locations. Melissa McBride confirmed as much in a brand new video interview for The Walking Dead YouTube channel which offers up a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming season. Chatting about what fans can expect from the next chapter of the show, she reveals: "The story is kind of starting over a little bit".
If you've been keeping up with the goings-on of the TWD Universe, this might not come as a surprise to you. It's clear that Daryl Dixon will see a shift in its third season, primarily because of its new location, and that will no doubt bring with it some brand new storylines. The first two seasons were set in France as Daryl found himself in Europe for the first time and he ultimately decided to stay to protect Laurent and Sister Isabelle. Carol would show up there too in the second season and help him get Laurent to safety, before they then continued on their trek to get back home to Alexandria.

Season 3 will now look to start a new story as Daryl and Carol are the only two main characters from the first two seasons in it (and, let's be honest, they're original Walking Dead characters more than anything else). So it will all begin again now as they arrive in London first and meet the mysterious Julian (portrayed by Stephen Merchant) before all three of them head out onto the sea and eventually arrive in Spain.
According to the creative team, the new setting will allow the show to adopt something of a new, Spaghetti Western approach. And with that, Daryl will adopt more of a Clint Eastwood-type of character through the season, perhaps even taking us back to his more serious, hardened days of the early seasons of The Walking Dead. After all, Spaghetti Westerns are known for morally-ambiguous characters, antiheroes, and violence - and it goes without saying that Daryl Dixon will be bringing all of that.
With a clean slate, there is a brand new opportunity for storytelling. We know that this season will see Daryl and Carol clash over what they should do next: The former wants to return home and stop fighting other peoples' battles while the latter wants to help people in need. And with the Spanish town that they are staying in seemingly overrun by a new villain, it will be up to the two badass characters to stop him.
With six spinoffs and an 11-season run for the original show, The Walking Dead franchise is known for reinventing itself. The fact that Daryl Dixon gets to do it all again, just three seasons into its own run, is so very exciting. We can't wait to see what this new chapter for the show looks like!
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 premieres on September 7, 2025.
