The Walking Dead introduced viewers to a bunch of colorful characters over its 11-season run, but while there are many that fans gravitated toward and appreciated, others were overlooked despite playing crucial roles in the zombie series.
There's one particular Walking Dead character I can think of now that fans just didn't give the time of day like others. This character is an OG as well, which makes it even more surprising considering how much they contributed to the group’s early survival. Who remembers, T-Dog?
Yeah, T-Dog is easily one of The Walking Dead's most underrated characters, and it just doesn't make sense that most people forget just how important he was to everything going on in the first two seasons and a bit of the third.
We first meet T-Dog in the second episode of season 1. After rescuing Rick from a horde of walkers, Glenn brings him to his survival group. They're all hiding out in a building. That's where we meet T-Dog. Sure, he doesn't say much at first, but being talkative doesn't have anything to do with survival in a world like that. In fact, T-Dog proves pretty early on that actions matter far more than words.
While some members of the group were snappier or less cooperative, T-Dog was always willing to go on a run. And when it actually came down to taking out the flesh-eating walkers, he never really hesitated to step up and get his hands dirty. T-Dog even had to take racist remarks from Merle. Imagine being stuck in a world overrun by walkers and, on top of that, having to deal with hostility from someone inside your own group. T-Dog was truly a strong individual through and through!
He definitely did his best to try to stick up for himself as well. In addition, he wasn't selfish either. When he saw someone in need, he was right there to help. Sadly, he would ultimately meet his demise in the fourth episode of the third season. While trying to secure the gates to the prison during a walker attack, a walker sneaks up on him and bites him on the shoulder. T-Dog manages to take it out, but it's already too late. He could've just given up right then and there, but no, he was just too kindhearted to leave Carol behind in a moment like that.
He knew that eventually he'd turn, so he tried his best to get Carol to safety before the infection completely took over. Did he have to go that far for someone else in his final moments? No, he absolutely didn’t. But that just shows you how selfless he truly was. After throwing himself at a bunch of walkers, he yells for Carol to run and get to safety.
Honestly, I personally think most people forget about T-Dog because he wasn't one to make his presence known. He didn't try to force himself into the spotlight or demand attention like some of the other characters. Instead, he was the kind of character who showed up, did the hard work, and kept things moving without making it about himself.
But that’s exactly why he deserves more credit in hindsight. People like him are needed in survival groups because too many strong personalities can actually do more harm than good when everything is on the line. Given the type of show The Walking Dead is, I knew there was a good chance he'd eventually die. However, I wish T-Dog had at least made it to season 5 or beyond. That way, we could’ve seen more of what he was capable of when given a bit more focus and development.
The Walking Dead can be streamed on Netflix.
