The Last of Us season 3 production is on a short, planned break after filming for a few months in Vancouver, British Columbia, but the cast of the new season of the hit HBO TV series is still growing.
According to a report from Deadline, Peter Sarsgaard is joining the cast of season 3. In the new season, Sarsgaard will star as Amon, one of the Seraphites' leaders.
While there are a handful of season 2 stars confirmed to return for The Last of Us season 3, Sarsgaard will join a number of new cast members, including Jason Ritter, who plays Hanley; Jorge Lendeborg Jr., who takes over as Manny; Clea Duvall; Michelle Mao, who plays Yara; Kyriana Kratter, who plays Lev; Li Jun Li, who plays Miriam; and more.
Of course, we'll also see Bella Ramsey, Kaitlyn Dever, Isabel Merced, Gabriel Luna, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, Jeffrey Wright, Ariela Barer, and Patrick Wilson reprise their roles in season 3.
In The Last of Us season 3, we'll see the story shift from Ellie's story to Abby's story during her time in Seattle and possibly before that, via flashbacks. It will likely all lead to the massive showdown that we saw in the season 2 finale and beyond.
For those who aren't familiar with Sarsgaard, you will be soon, and you'll definitely enjoy his performance. He's an incredibly talented performer. We saw him most recently in a supporting role in another HBO show, DTF St. Louis. He also had a huge role in Apple TV's Presumed Innocent, along with The Batman, The Bride, and more.
Unfortunately, it's going to be quite a while until The Last of Us season 3. Production on the series started this spring in Canada. After a few months of production, it's currently in a month-long pause, likely due to the 2026 World Cup, which has games in Vancouver. The production is scheduled to continue through the end of the year, and then, we'll be waiting until 2027 before The Last of Us season 3 premieres on HBO.
That's the bad news about all of this. Despite all of the casting and production updates lately, we're going to have to wait well into next year before the season is ready to go.
On top of all that, it seems like The Last of Us season 3 will be the final season of the series. That hasn't been totally confirmed, and it seems like there should be a lot more to this story after season 3, but that's what everyone is saying right now.
