While The Walking Dead story has been led by many familiar faces over the years, there was one man who has been the unsung hero of the AMC franchise, making his presence felt on the show from the very beginning. That man was the legendary actor Rif Hutton, who sadly passed away at the age of 73 after a battle with brain cancer.

Hutton is an icon of the screen, with his performances in the likes of Doogie Howser M.D. and JAG being among his most famous roles. He was also a familiar face in the nerd culture sphere, having appeared in the likes of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Star Trek Generations on the live-action side of things, while also voicing characters in animated fare such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Ice Age: Collision Course, Shrek and the Hotel Transylvania movies. However, he also played a significant role - or, should we say, roles - in the Walking Dead franchise.

Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, Scott M. Gimple, paid tribute to the veteran actor on social media, revealing that he holds a unique place in TWDU history as he was responsible for bringing the walkers to life, "doing walker voices" across all of the TWD shows right back to the very beginning in the pilot episode. An accompanying video actually shows Hutton in action voicing the walkers and it's pretty incredible.

You can see the tribute below:

To say that providing voicework for the walkers throughout the whole Walking Dead franchise made Hutton perhaps the most valuable player of the legendary saga would be an understatement. For starters, that means his work has been on our screens for 16 years - and across seven shows. While the franchise started with The Walking Dead in 2010, it has since expanded with spinoffs Fear The Walking Dead, World Beyond, Tales of the Walking Dead, Dead City, Daryl Dixon, and The Ones Who Live. And it's safe to say that voicing the undead creatures in a show all about undead creatures was no easy feat. But Hutton made it sound effortless.

The walkers that appear in the series are extremely convincing and you would honestly believe that the sounds coming out of them actually belong to them. But Gimple revealed in his tribute to Hutton that the actors on-set of the TWD Universe shows rarely do their own growls, as that those are added in in post-production. And that's where Hutton and the other voice actors would have come in, adding their own unique guttural roars and growls to ensure that the walkers were scary in every way imaginable - even through their sounds.

From the clip that Gimple shared, you can see Hutton absolutely nail the assignment. The growls he makes in that clip are so unbelievably iconic that you could tell that they belonged to the show's walkers in an instant. And, honestly, those instantly-recognizable sounds are just another example of us witnessing some of Hutton's finest work over the years. The fact that he provided voicework for all of the Walking Dead shows is a testament to how incredible his performance - and talented a performer - he truly was.

On behalf of us at Undead Walking, we send our condolences to Rif Hutton's loved ones, as well as everyone who has ever worked with him. And we thank him for his incredible work and amazing legacy in the TWD Universe and beyond. May he Rest In Peace.
