Norman Reedus sent shockwaves around The Walking Dead universe when he revealed that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 would not be coming to AMC this summer or fall after. Reedus revealed that the fourth and final season of the series would be delayed until 2027.
The news was, of course, a massive surprise for fans of The Walking Dead and Daryl Dixon. I don't know if AMC explicitly stated that Daryl Dixon season 4 was coming in 2026, but everyone, and I mean actually everyone, assumed that Daryl Dixon season 4 would be released this year.
Then, the rumblings started happening. We heard that Daryl Dixon, a show that was a staple at San Diego Comic-Con, wasn't going back for this year. That seemed weird when season 4 was the final season.
Then, on Friday, July 24, the morning of the Dead City season 3 panel, Reedus confirmed what we'd all been afraid of: Daryl Dixon season 4 isn't coming until 2027. Walking Dead producer and CCO of The Walking Dead Scott M. Gimple shared the Daryl Dixon season 4 news during the Dead City panel in Hall H.
For almost a full year, we've been expecting to see Daryl Dixon come to an end this fall, and now, we're going to be waiting for a lot longer. That's a lot for fans to digest in such a short amount of time. It's definitely disappointing and frustrating in some ways.
When you're expecting something to happen and it doesn't happen the way you plan or expect, that's hard to deal with. It's even harder to understand when there's so much emotion behind something like a TV show ending.
Despite all of that, it actually makes sense for AMC to delay Daryl Dixon season 4 until 2027 for a few key reasons.
Why delaying Daryl Dixon season 4 makes sense for AMC and The Walking Dead universe
Daryl Dixon is AMC's biggest Walking Dead show at the moment. Dead City is great, and season 3 already looks like the best season yet, but it's not Daryl Dixon level yet. On top of that, the new season just premiered.
I feel silly for expecting AMC to release new seasons of Dead City and Daryl Dixon back-to-back. It makes no sense from a business perspective to do that. It doesn't help subscriptions. It doesn't allow time for the network to seek out some deals for advertisers if this season is really good. And it doesn't give AMC+ users a lot of reason to keep subscribing after Daryl Dixon season 4 ends.
AMC doesn't have a confirmed show in The Walking Dead universe beyond Daryl Dixon season 4 in the works right now. Dead City has not been renewed for season 4 yet. Daryl Dixon comes to an end with season 4.
If AMC rolled out season 4 later this year before renewing Dead City for season 4, that's not exactly a great look for the network. It sure makes a lot of fans like us anxious to think about the big break between seasons of The Walking Dead universe shows.
Now, things might be happening behind the scenes, and I hope they are, but from a Walking Dead fan perspective, the future of the franchise and universe is definitely up in the air. We've been talking about it for a while at Undead Walking. AMC is officially in uncharted territory when it comes to The Walking Dead franchise beyond Dead City and Daryl Dixon.
So, by pushing Daryl Dixon season 4 to 2027, AMC and The Walking Dead team have more time to make a decision on the future of Dead City. It also makes some time to talk more about this big, rumored spinoff with original cast members that everyone is talking about all of the time. Most importantly, AMC guarantees that we see a Walking Dead series in 2027.
If Dead City and Daryl Dixon aired back-to-back this fall, there's no way that we'd see Dead City season 4, assuming it's renewed, in 2027. There's just too much to do. Dead City season 3 wrapped in late 2025, and it still took seven months for the show to premiere. We're in for a long break even if that show is renewed.
So, while I hate that Daryl Dixon season 4 is not coming this year for a lot of reasons, I do feel like that it makes a lot of sense for AMC. They get their Walking Dead show in 2027, buying more time to figure out what's next for this universe, and they give Daryl Dixon a chance to be a real showcase for the network in 2027 before the show comes to an end.
