The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 is finally here, and it truly feels like a completely new show that actively distances itself from everything that came before. In the span of just two episodes, the primary antagonistic forces of two entire seasons have bitten the dust. The Croat and the Dama may be no more, but their absence was quickly filled by a set of new faces who have injected the spin-off series with life.
The list of changes doesn't stop there, however. After being in a will-they-won't-they-kill-each-other type of relationship for way too long, Maggie and Negan are finally on good terms. Furthermore, Perlie Armstrong has exited the show (for the time being, at least) as he went back home to try and give the New Babylon Federation a fresh start. But out of all these major differences, one in particular has been making waves for all the right reasons.
The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 finally gives Hershel something of substance to do
Oh, Hershel, where do we begin with you? For starters, Maggie's son didn't have much to do in the first season of The Walking Dead: Dead City because the Croat kidnapped him. While he was eventually saved, all we saw him really do was... complain and get angry at his mom. Things didn't look any better in the second season, where not only did he complain even more (to the point where he pushed Maggie), but audiences eventually learned that he willingly let the Dama cut off one of his toes.
To top things off, the finale of The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 saw Hershel officially side with the Dama, putting him at direct odds with his mom and Negan. On the bright side, this idea wasn't entertained for too long. In the opening episode of season 3, Hershel finally managed to break free from the Dama's spell after the relentless villain asked him to kill Maggie. But not only has he returned to the side of the "good guys" since then, but he is now extremely helpful.
One of the newcomers in The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 is Luis, an emergency doctor who has become a (much-needed) mentor to Hershel. All the medical training finally paid off in episode 3, titled "Emigrants", in which two groups of wounded survivors arrive at Maggie and Renata's hospital. With so many lives on the line, it was impossible for Luis to look after everyone, and that's where Hershel came in.
The latest Dead City episode was the first time in the series as a whole that Maggie actually had a proud look on her face when looking at Hershel, who was busy saving lives. Furthermore, the series even made an active point of highlighting that Hershel is finally deserving of his name, which was given to him in honor of one of the greatest The Walking Dead legends: Maggie's father, Hershel Greene.
On a personal note, I was ready for Bobbie the grizzly bear to eat Hershel after he pushed Maggie back in season 2. As such, it has been a refreshing change to see him actively help the community his mom and Renata are trying to build. His arc has been one of the biggest improvements in The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3, and I can't wait to see what other surprises lie in store for the character.
