Warning: This post contains MAJOR spoilers for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3, episode 7.
The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 has been, for the most part, a fun and lighthearted ride. Maggie and Renata have been building a large but sustainable community where every individual has access to electricity and food. Negan found a new best friend in the form of Mason Dillard, and the two have spent most of their time playing video games and drinking at a bar. Even Hershel has had a major change in attitude, and now he's actually useful and a good son. However, none of this means death hasn't been looming since the start of the season.
Major characters from The Walking Dead: Dead City were killed right at the beginning of season 3, including the Dama, the Croat, and Benjamin Pierce. Furthermore, Negan recently shot one member of Maggie and Renata's community named Fabian. Now, all hell has broken loose just ahead of the season finale thanks to a new bad guy loose in Manhattan who wasted no time showing why he shouldn't be messed with.

Mason Dillard shot Renata in The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3, episode 7
There's a popular comic-book saying that "all it takes is one bad day" for someone to become evil, and Mason Dillard just proved that theory. The former police officer has not only been harmless for most of the season, but he has actually helped Maggie and Renata grow their community while also becoming best friends with Negan along the way. However, there is one very "unique" thing about him, and it is that he considers the walkers trapped in his bar his genuine friends.
Dillard explained that he spent a lot of time undercover as a cop when the world hadn't ended, and he sometimes got lost in the mindset of the characters he portrayed. When the undead began to walk, most survivors became part of larger groups in hopes of surviving the countless threats lurking on every corner. However, Dillard secluded himself from the outside world, and with no one to talk to, he started to pretend that two walkers in his bar were his friends. Over time, he truly became attached to them and even named these walking corpses Cockenspiel and Titicaca.
Things escalated incredibly quickly when Negan shot Fabian for threatening Maggie, and the bullet also pierced Cockenspiel. When Dillard got to the bar and found out his walker friend was dead, he immediately lost it. Negan asked Dillard to leave the place since things were clearly spiraling out of control, but to no avail. As a result, Negan also killed Titicaca as a warning, and in that very moment, a villain was born.

Dillard got out of the bar, cut his own face, and went to Renata and Maggie, claiming that Negan was the one who injured him. All of this was a ruse just to gather weapons and an army from the community in order to go back to the bar and avenge his fallen friends. Renata is on board with the plan, claiming that Negan has been a loose end for quite some time now, especially since he also killed the Dama.
Dillard and Renata go to the crime scene, armed to the teeth and with backup at their side. However, Maggie constantly argues that simply killing Negan isn't the right way to handle the situation, and Renata eventually comes around. At that very moment, the leader of the community calls off the hit on Negan and asks everyone to go back to their homes. This order clearly didn't sit well with Dillard, who was dead set on getting his revenge. As a result, he shot Renata and took her place as the "new leader" of the group.
Unfortunately, this marks the end of a woman who was a fair and (mostly) cool-headed leader. However, this could open the door for Negan to become the new community co-leader along with Maggie. After all, that's what The Walking Dead spin-off show has been building towards. But while it may have accomplished this goal, we never expected it would be in such a violent fashion.
The last episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 will be released on Sep. 13, 2026.
