Fans of The Walking Dead franchise are in for some good news! The spinoff The Walking Dead: Dead City is gearing up for its third season, and key details about its total episode count have seemingly surfaced.
While AMC nor the show's creative team has officially confirmed these details, filings with the Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) and industry reports provide a glimpse of what viewers can expect. For followers of Maggie Rhee and Negan Smith’s post-apocalyptic adventures in Manhattan, these insights offer a tantalizing hint at what’s next!

Dead City season 3 episode count and writing credits
According to WGA filings, Dead City season 3 will reportedly feature eight episodes. This is consistent with last season's episode count, while the first season had only six episodes. By keeping the same episode count as season 2, the zombie series seems to have found a rhythm that works. But again, we don't know for certain if this number is final.
However, it wouldn't be surprising if the show sticks with eight episodes. TV shows typically try to maintain a consistent episode count over their seasons. Sometimes, networks or showrunners adjust the episode count based on story requirements, production schedules, or budget considerations. However, keeping eight episodes would allow Dead City season 3 to continue its narrative smoothly while giving characters and plotlines enough room to develop.
The WGA filings also shared details about the writers attached to each episode. This gives fans a peek at the creative forces shaping the season. Key contributors include new showrunner Seth Hoffman, alongside Matthew Negrete, Justin Boyd, Jacey Heldrich, and Mira Z. Barnum. Most of the episodes were reportedly written by a single writer, while two were co-written by two writers.

What we know so far about Dead City season 3's plot
Dead City has distinguished itself from its parent series by shifting the narrative focus and setting. Unlike the rural and suburban environments familiar to longtime fans of The Walking Dead, Dead City places Maggie and Negan in a walker-infested Manhattan.
Over two seasons, viewers have witnessed the evolving dynamic between these two iconic Walking Dead characters. In the Dead City season 2 finale, Maggie gets the opportunity to finally take down Negan for all the pain he caused her. However, she ultimately chooses to spare him instead. This signals a pivotal shift in their relationship.
Instead of continuing the cycle of violence, Maggie opts for a pragmatic alliance with Negan. Dead City season 3 will see Negan and Maggie joining forces to build and lead the first sustainable community in Manhattan since the apocalypse. But as they try to create a safe, functioning society, past conflicts and new chaos threaten to ruin everything.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan are both set to reprise their respective roles as Negan and Maggie in the third installment. The returning cast also includes Gaius Charles as Perlie Armstrong, Željko Ivanek as The Croat, Lisa Emery as The Dama, Logan Kim as Hershel Rhee, and Keir Gilchrist as Benjamin Pierce. Joining as newcomers for Dead City season 3 are Aimee Garcia as Renata, Jimmi Simpson as Dillard, and Raúl Castillo as Luis.
While an official premiere date for the highly anticipated third season hasn't been announced just yet, we're all hoping to see the show return sometime in 2026. With Daryl Dixon season 4 confirmed to start airing on AMC sometime this year, it would be nice to see Dead City season 3 do so as well. That's what happened with each show's previous installments last year.
There was just a short gap between the two seasons, which allowed fans to stay immersed in The Walking Dead universe without waiting too long. However, it's all up to the post-production process and AMC. Fingers crossed, we get to see Dead City season 3 sooner rather than later. But until an official date is announced, fans will have to wait patiently.
