With a cast like The Walking Dead, where stars have built their careers on the mainline show's popularity, plenty of great movies feature them. Now, Steven Yeun has another great one streaming on Netflix that you should check out.
Perfect for crime and thriller fans, Animals is the latest film from the former Walking Dead star, and it’s now streaming. If you’re looking for something to check out this weekend, this is the movie to see.
What Animals is about
There are so many great crime thrillers out there with fun storylines. But this one, I must admit, sounds like it’s right up your alley because it’s right up mine.
The basic premise follows a couple, Mark and Abigail Kimball, and their son. One day, however, the son of the couple is kidnapped, right as Mark is running to become the mayor of Los Angeles, of course.
As for the kidnapping, Mark and Abigail must somehow raise money for the kidnappers, but since he’s been trying to run for mayor, they’ve spent a lot on his campaign. To save their son, they have to dig into the dirty parts of their lives, the ones they never wanted the public to see, and get the money they need.
Steven Yeun actually doesn’t play the kidnapper (which, honestly, he probably would kill that role too). He plays Mark’s campaign manager, Sam (according to The Hollywood Reporter), which, good god, I can only imagine what kind of dirt he probably has on both Mark and Abigail.

Who also stars in Animals
While Steven Yeun is a big name in this new Netflix film, plenty of other stars are worth watching. Ben Affleck and Kerry Washington, both critically acclaimed actors, will play Mark and Abigail, a couple who must figure out what to do when their son is kidnapped.
Affleck, who also directed and co-wrote the film with Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray, spoke praise of the story and the cast, including Yeun, in an interview with Netflix TUDUM:
“Who are we really? Who are we when our masks come off? Ultimately, this is a story about whether people have a real moral compass or seek to do what's in their best interests. The movie is really about marriage — what it means to attach yourself to someone, the bargains and exchanges…I’m a big believer that the audience has expectations of me, of Kerry, of Steven, of everyone. You want to use that and then drift away from it in ways that help tell your story.”
Talk about an impressive story. Alongside Affleck, Washington, and Yeun, Gillian Anderson plays Dayle Burton. The cast also includes Luis Gerardo Mendez, Adriana Paz, Ray Fisher, and Christopher Woodley.

Why you should watch Animals
To be honest, this is the kind of thrilling movie that feels like it's made for fans of The Walking Dead. Sure, there are no zombies, but it’s fast-paced, with twists and turns, and it follows characters who have to navigate a serious moral compass, something The Walking Dead characters have always struggled with.
It’s also fun to see Steven Yeun in another role that feels like the complete opposite of Glenn. Seeing Yeun in movies and shows like Nope, Beef, and so much more has made me a huge fan of his acting beyond his 6 seasons on The Walking Dead. This is the kind of Netflix film that I think the actor would rock.
Netflix also has a pretty good record with crime thrillers. Earlier this year, Affleck also starred in another Netflix thriller, The Rip, which received positive reviews. So I have a feeling this will be a fun one for everyone to enjoy, especially with this stellar cast (including Yeun) leading the way.
