The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 premieres on AMC and AMC+ on Sunday July 26. Daryl Dixon season 4 will arrive on both platforms this fall.

After all this time, The Walking Dead franchise is still alive and well. It's extremely impressive considering that the original series bowed out almost four years ago (after 11 seasons!) but AMC has found a way to keep things going through multiple spinoffs - most of which have now also spawned multiple seasons. And yet, fans of the franchise have been curious as to whether there is an endgame in mind for the saga.

According to industry insider The Beyond Reporter, the long-rumored revival of The Walking Dead is in advanced development. Although the scooper adds that it has yet to be officially greenlit by AMC, the consensus among audiences is that it will be as the cable network is committed to bringing new stories set within the TWD Universe to our screens - and it surely wouldn't miss up an opportunity to launch the buzziest of them all.

Fans of the franchise will know that this isn't the first time that talks of a project like this have come up, as it's been rumored for a long time. But this is the first significant update that has surfaced in quite some time - which is necessary considering that another one of the newer spinoffs, Daryl Dixon, is set to end with its fourth and final season this fall. Prior to this, multiple insiders confirmed its existence, including the highly-reliable Daniel Richtman.

Ever since The Walking Dead concluded with its eleventh season, there have been rumblings that AMC's long-term plan was to bring the cast of the three spinoffs back together again at some point down the line for a brand new project.

This new crossover / reunion / spinoff would essentially act as a season 12 of the original show, operating as a limited revival primarily led by Andrew Lincoln's Rick, Danai Gurira's Michonne, Norman Reedus' Daryl Dixon, Melissa McBride's Carol Peletier, Lauren Cohan's Maggie Rhee, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan. Those six are the leads of the three newer spinoffs, so their stories never got an official conclusion in the original series finale (as it had to set up those offshoots); returning for a single revival season would allow the franchise to definitively make up for that (while also potentially inviting back some other familiar faces too).

Lincoln and Gurira's returns in The Ones Who Live were a long time coming and the fact that this show didn't get a second season because the storyline had been completed had fans holding out hope that their next returns would take place in a separate project. Although Rick and Michonne's arcs were essentially concluded in this series' finale, there is still so much unfinished business: Rick never got to reunite with Daryl and Carol as they are off in France / London / Spain, and he also never got the chance to see that Negan had redeemed himself like he hoped he would. A spinoff crossover would allow the TWD Universe to finally explore those loose plot threads.

While it's important to take all rumors with a grain of salt until otherwise confirmed by AMC, the possibility of a spinoff / revival series has been acknowledged by the creatives behind the franchise before. The network's Chief Content Officer of the Walking Dead Universe, Scott M. Gimple, has addressed the possibility of that - among other spinoffs - happening one day, while longtime TWD executive producer Greg Nicotero recently confirmed that they have "been talking about it for a couple of years".

Taking all of that into account, it sounds like the long-awaited crossover season could be moving closer and closer to getting greenlit. With Daryl Dixon ending this fall, and a potential return to San Diego Comic-Con this summer, an official announcement could very well be imminent. Here's hoping that this is indeed the case.
