We're coming up on 15 years of The Walking Dead and the classic franchise is still going strong. Although the original show bowed out three years ago, the AMC franchise has continued to feed the core audience with new storylines centred on classic characters, ensuring that there is plenty of content from the TWD Universe to keep the fans invested.

It's true, this franchise has stood the test of time and it certainly looks like it will continue to do so in the years ahead, as the survivors of the zombie apocalypse continue to encounter new villain after new villain. And it appears that, just as we thought we'd come across another, the TWD Universe surprised us with a completely different one.

That's right - the new trailer for the franchise's most recent installment confirms that the true villain was hiding in plain sight.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 finale trailer confirms Fede as the main villain of the series

AMC has unveiled the trailer for the season 3 finale of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and it's an appropriately intense clip. The episode, titled "Solaz del Mar", will see Daryl and Carol attempt to complete their goals in Spain in order to get back out onto the water so that they can return home to America, but that's going to be easier said than done. For starters, Daryl is still in Barcelona while Carol herself has found her way into a high-stakes situation in the village. Through it all, a surprising villain emerges.

Watch the trailer below and prepare for the showdown of the season as that new villain unleashes his rage:

Did you see that reveal coming? Yep, it's true; the season 3 finale of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will seemingly confirm that Fede was the villain everyone should have been worried about. And that's really quite the surprise.

Yes, the character has absolutely shown some very questionable tendencies over the six episodes of the season but, as the de factor mayor of Solaz del Mar, he was aware of the fact that he had to make some questionable decisions from time to time. That includes the uneasy alliance with El Alcazar and the ceremony known as La Ofrenda.

Speaking of El Alcazar, fans had thought that they were the main villains of the season due to their ominous introduction in the second episode, their outdated customs and the sinister approach of their leader, the future king of Spain Guillermo Torres. It's clear that they are still antagonists not to be trifled with (Daryl and Paz are in Barcelona in a bid to stop them and free Justina and Elena) but it appears that they aren't the primary villains that they were set up to be in the season's earlier episodes.

The other villains of the season, the Primitivos, also seemed to be set up as an overarching threat, but the showdown in Solaz del Mar (when the attempted to overrun the village) seemed to take care of them for the moment. And that could mean that they will play a more long-term threat as we know that Daryl and Carol will likely remain in Spain for the show's fourth and final season.

That leaves Fede, who has been growing more and more sinister through the weeks. From his reluctance to accept Daryl and Carol into his town to the recent revelation that he was actually poisoning Roberto, we knew that he couldn't be trusted - especially after it was revealed that Justina never actually volunteered to go to El Alcazar (Fede, her uncle, sent her) - but he ups the ante in the finale it seems, and it all has to do with his long-standing rivalry with Antonio.

The sixth episode of the season revealed that Fede was also in love with Antonio's wife, Maria, and he likely blames him for her death on Monument Day. That has escalated throughout the season as it's been clear that both men don't get along. It has, thus far, culminated in Antonio calling Fede's leadership into question in public in an attempt to distract him so that Carol and Roberto can escape, but it appears as though that might result in a near-death experience in the finale when Fede seemingly puts him and Roberto before a herd of walkers. Luckily for Antonio, Carol is there to protect them. And we all know what Carol does to bad people! Fede better watch out!

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 wraps up with its season finale on Sunday, October 19, on AMC and AMC+.
