Up to this point, 2026 has been a relatively quiet year for fans of The Walking Dead franchise. There have been no new seasons of the saga's ongoing spinoffs and very little in the way of major TWD Universe news. But that's all about to change, as AMC has officially confirmed that both spinoffs Daryl Dixon and Dead City will be making their presence felt on screens through the second half of this year.
That is undoubtedly music to the ears of longtime TWD fans, who weren't sure whether the third season of Dead City would air / stream this year despite having been filmed over six months ago. But the network's announcement in May confirmed that Dead City season 3 would arrive this summer, setting the stage for Daryl Dixon's fourth and final season in the fall / winter. And that made it official, as it also means that two major franchise legends will actually return to the shared universe this year.
AMC's date announcement confirms the big Dead City returns are coming this year after all
It's official: The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 will premiere on AMC and AMC+ on Sunday, July 26. The cable network made the announcement along with the first trailer for the season, ending months of speculation that the spinoff series' third outing would be held until 2027 instead - speculation which stemmed from the show's omission during an AMC earnings call in which the network previewed what was to come in 2026. And while we certainly are excited to see Maggie and Negan take on what is shaping up to be a very different kind of story this time around, we're even more excited at the prospect of the major returns that this season promises now taking place in a matter of weeks.
See, this isn't just any ordinary season of Dead City. We already know that two franchise veterans will be making their presence felt across these eight episodes, and both of them promise to make this particular season of the show a real game-changer for the franchise.
It was announced in summer 2025 that TWD veteran Seth Hoffman would be taking over as Dead City's showrunner from the third season onwards, stepping in to replace Eli Jorné who had stepped down after the first two seasons. Hoffman is TWD franchise royalty, having served as an executive producer on The Walking Dead itself from seasons 4 through 6. And fans consider his return to the franchise a welcome surprise for Dead City.
Hoffman wrote some of the original show's all-time greatest episodes, including "Too Far Gone", "Us", "Claimed", "The Distance", "JSS", and "No Way Out". In fact, many consider the show's most lacklustre stint (generally between seasons 7 and 8) as beginning when Hoffman left the show. Needless to say, that makes his comeback good news for Dead City, as that show has been something of a mixed bag which could really benefit from the gravitas that Hoffman brings to his writing. And he's not the only major TWD returnee from that era coming back to screens this year.
AMC's reveal of Dead City season 3's release date has confirmed that we will also be seeing Beth Greene on our screens again in 2026. While the cable network has yet to officially acknowledge Emily Kinney's return to the franchise, set photos from earlier this year confirmed that the star will be reprising her role for the first time since the character's death in The Walking Dead season 5.

As for how it's going to happen, it's believed that Dead City season 3 will be featuring some kind of alternate reality / dream sequence episode. The set photos that spoiled Kinney's comeback showcase Lauren Cohan's Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan out in a very normal-looking Central Park (potentially during the holidays) where they cross paths with Beth. No walkers, no threats, and no death; just Maggie and her sister together again. Entertainment Weekly reports that it's set to be a full alternate reality episode.
While Dead City has certainly provided the thrills throughout the past two seasons, fans have considered it somewhat limited in what it can do because of the lengths to which the Negan / Maggie storyline was already explored in the original series. Season 3 looks to move past that long-standing blood feud and focus on a more positive future - they might even be using the past to make that happen with Beth's cameo in the alternate reality episode. And this new direction is down to Seth Hoffman himself, who told EW:
"Maggie and Negan understandably have been like this for a very, very long time... And I think we were all excited to imagine what could it possibly look like for these two characters to genuinely be working together for a common goal."
Reading that alone, you can tell that Hoffman and Kinney's returns to the TWD Universe are going to be game-changers. While Dead City was always destined to entertain, this change-of-pace - one that uses The Walking Dead's own history to pull it off - could very well elevate it to the next level, perhaps even setting the stage for more to come.
Taking all of that into account, it's safe to say that 2026 isn't going to be such a quiet year for TWD fans after all. What once seemed like a year in which AMC would completely ignore Dead City, we will get the third season's two highly-anticipated returns. That, coupled with the next stage in the show's story itself and the final season of Daryl Dixon, is a win-win-win indeed.
