When Maggie Rhee picked up Lucille for the first time in the second season ofThe Walking Dead: Dead City, it wasn't difficult to imagine all the emotions she felt. This is the same type of weapon her husband, Glenn, was killed with in the main series, and Maggie had the chance to finally exact her revenge on Negan. But, instead, she chose to take the high road. What does this mean for the future relationship of the two long-time enemies? TWD Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple shares some insight into the future.
AMC has yet to renew Dead City for a third season, but there has been much chatter from cast and crew regarding more story, giving us hope for a third installment of the first direct spinoff of The Walking Dead. This story features Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprising their roles as Maggie and Negan, characters initially introduced in the flagship series.
The second season focused on the battle for control of NYC and the methane production. The season concludes with a monologue spoken by Maggie, Negan, and Perlie Armstrong, a character introduced in season 1 of the spinoff, which looks toward the future. The characters appear to be ready to work together to make a better world vastly different than what the gangs of Manhattan and New Babylon envisioned.
“They’re not going to be skipping and holding hands, but hate is corrosive to the person hating, and I think that’s what this season portrayed. It’s not necessarily sunshine and rainbows, but I do think this is a happy ending," Gimple revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
This is something most fans will be glad to hear. While many viewers are over the beef between the two, it is good to hear they won't be besties either.
It may be a happy ending for this part of the story, but Maggie's relationship with her son is far from resolved. Hershel took it upon himself to betray his mother and New Babylon to the Dama, a powerful woman who wielded much power in Manhattan. The boy was abducted in season 1, and the Dama used her powers of manipulation to bring the boy to her side and convince him to break ties with his mother.

If the series is renewed, this will have to be a massive focus as Maggie won't give up fighting for her son, whom she has protected for so long. Leaving her son in the presence of the Dama was a difficult but necessary tough love decision for Maggie. Although the boy has been brainwashed, the hope is he will see the light and return to his mother instead of becoming a villain. But what a twist that would be.
The good news is that Maggie and Negan have finally let go of their past grievances, which will allow the story to build in a different direction.
"Where do they go from here? What do these choices mean, and what kinds of stories help us harness that relationship, that challenge, that showcase their new dynamics? The last two seasons featured a dynamic that’s now concluded [with Maggie and Negan settling their score]. Now, it’s time to show you something different," Gimple teased.
Fans are hopeful that AMC will renew The Walking Dead: Dead City for a third season, just as the network has done for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. The Daryl and Carol spinoff will premiere its third, six-part season on AMC and AMC+ beginning September 7.
