It's quite ironic that a franchise about a group of survivors avoiding death at all costs has managed to do just that itself. The Walking Dead was originally envisioned as an adaptation of Robert Kirkman's acclaimed graphic novel series, but it wasn't long until the AMC series took on a life of its own, becoming a pop-culture phenomenon that told its own stories too, deviating from the source material for better or worse. And that helped it run for 11 remarkable seasons despite some pretty significant cast departures throughout.
Even now, almost four years after that series ended, the franchise has continued. Although one of the last two standing spinoffs, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, is set to bow out next year, it's pretty clear that all involved in the other spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City, plan to make more seasons of that one. And that will ensure that the TWD Universe stays on our screens for the foreseeable. All that we have to wait for is AMC to make the official announcement.
The good news is that it sounds like that announcement may be coming, along with some other surprises.
TWD Scott Gimple confirms a lot of Walking Dead news is coming soon
AMC's Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, Scott M. Gimple, recently sat down for an interview with the cast of Dead City at San Diego Comic-Con ahead of the show's season 3 premiere. Speaking to ComicBook.com, he reassured audiences that there are plans for a fourth season of the show too, confirming that they didn't make season 3 with the intention of it being the last one. And something tells us that, after the overwhelmingly positive response to that season, this remains very true.
With Daryl Dixon's impending conclusion, Dead City will become the face of the Walking Dead Universe for the foreseeable, so it's really important that they renew it for a fourth season - because without Dead City at this point, there is no TWD Universe - despite what any future plans might say. And speaking of future plans, this is where things get really interesting, as Gimple has teased some big Walking Dead news in the coming weeks. In what will definitely make longtime fans' ears perk up, he specifically brought this up when talking about other projects that may or may not be in the works, saying:
"We're hoping for a season 4. We are working on other Walking Dead things. There are things in process... the interval between the shows has grown, but it's still cooking. And I think there is going to be a lot of Walking Dead news in the coming weeks."
Naturally, the question is: What is all this Walking Dead news? I think the most obvious thing here is a Dead City season 4 announcement. The third season is preparing to wrap up in the coming weeks, so the future of the franchise will immediately be placed back into the spotlight. We know that Daryl Dixon season 4 is coming up in 2027 (likely early 2027), so that will keep the fan concerns at bay for a little while, but reaffirming their investment in Dead City with a season 4 renewal would be a neat, easy way to ensure they don't creep back in for some time.
Another potential one could be that Daryl Dixon announcement. Upon Dead City season 3's conclusion, sights will be set on the final season of Daryl Dixon, which we don't know too much about yet. We do know that Daryl and Carol Peletier will look to make their way back from Spain to the US, but considering that the season was filmed this time in 2025 (and was initially expected to release in 2026), perhaps a trailer, first look, or date announcement would be the next course of action in preparing fans for its eventual rollout. It is the final season after all.
Naturally, Gimple's comments about other projects is the elephant in the room here. He and his fellow AMC colleagues have made comments in recent years about plans for other TWD Universe shows without ever fully going into what they could be (and if they are happening for certain). Could the fact that he mentioned those vague projects right before the "Walking Dead news" tease suggest that it will be a new project reveal? It's possible - and there is one very specific reason as to why.
This isn't the only time that Gimple has referenced the longer gaps between TWD shows, explaining in a separate interview with The Direct that there will be "slower rollouts" and shorter projects in the franchise's future, confirming that there are still many plans for the Walking Dead saga but the urgency to rush them out isn't what it was - simply because the TV landscape has changed to allow for longer gaps between seasons. And this approach allows them to get it right.
With all of that in mind, it's possible that the long-awaited TWD crossover reunion project could get an official announcement soon. For years, fans have wanted to see Andrew Lincoln return to the role of Rick Grimes for one last adventure with the stars of the original Walking Dead series one more time. Gimple has confirmed on multiple occasions that he hopes to make it happen one day despite the logisitcal challenges that would be involved in making it. Perhaps the announcement could come in the form of a miniseries or two-hour special instead of an ongoing series? We wouldn't rule it out.
It's also possible that Gimple could announce a delay in future TWD programming, including that potential crossover story. There were concerns among the TWD Family fandom that 2027 would become the first year in 17 years that no Walking Dead content would air considering the uncertainty of the franchise's immediate future. By moving the final season of Daryl Dixon to 2027 instead, they have successfully plugged that hole, allowing any subsequent spinoffs a longer window and less pressure to produce new episodes quickly. Theoretically, Dead City season 4 or any other TWD show wouldn't need to premiere until 2028 at that rate.
Taking all of that into account, Scott M. Gimple has gotten all of our attention. We are ready for these potential Walking Dead announcements, whatever they may be. As long s they guarantee the future of the TWD Universe, you can rest assured that fans will be more than willing to embrace them and watch their favorite franchise continue to thrive.
