The Walking Dead: Dead City premiered its second season on AMC and AMC+ on May 4. The eight-part season will feature the battle between New Babylon and the lawless gangs on the island for control of the methane production in Manhattan. This season traps Maggie and Negan on opposite sides of the fight.

The second season of Dead City will continue to explore the relationship between Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and her son Hershel (Logan Kim). In the previous season, the boy was abducted by the Croat (Željko Ivanek), a former Savior. This required Maggie to enlist the help of her long time enemy, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

After he was rescued, Hershel was able to confront his mother and her obsession with exacting revenge for his father's brutal death at the hands of Negan. He told her that she never sees him because she is always focused on the former leader of the Saviors.

During his time as captive of the Croat and the Dama (Lisa Emery), a powerful woman in Manhattan, Hershel's pinky toe was cut off. He also spent time in the presence of the Dama who has made a lasting impact on him. He has a strange interest in the woman noted by the portrait he drew of her.

This article contains spoilers for episode 202, "Another Shitty Lesson," of The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Dead City - Hershel

In episode 202 of Dead City, Maggie would be betrayed by her son. This wasn't that big of shock to viewers who are fully aware that the boy is trying to get back to Manhattan. The big question is why?

In the episode, Maggie and Ginny (Mahina Napoleon), the orphan girl in her care, traveled as members of the New Babylon army on a mission to the island. Before boarding the boat, Maggie sees smoke and goes to investigate. She discovers a tire fire that is obviously a signal to the Croat. This is where she learns that Hershel followed her, and viewers know he is the one who set the fire. This notified the Croat and the others planning a counterattack, as they knew that New Babylon would be coming to the island, which resulted in the deaths of all but 15 of New Babylon's first wave of soldiers.

Despite growing up in the apocalypse, Hershel is still the stereotypical emotional teen, but what about the Dama intrigues him? What promises have been made to him so that he would betray the mother he claims to love? This storyline could become very interesting as the season progresses.

New episodes of The Walking Dead: Dead City air on AMC and AMC+ on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.
