The Walking Dead universe includes several spinoff series that expand the storyline to new locations and feature many exciting new characters. The Walking Dead: Dead City is the first direct sequel spinoff to the main series. Focused on fan-favorite characters Maggie and Negan, is Dead City worth watching?
Dead City premiered its first season in 2023 and quickly became the biggest series premiere on AMC+ since it was launched in 2020. The series is centered on Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), two characters first introduced in seasons 2 and 6, respectively in the flagship series. Dead City's story began several years after events of The Walking Dead's eleventh and final season.

Maggie, former leader of Hilltop, now resides at a place known as The Bricks with her son Hershel (Logan Kim) and others. When her son is abducted by a man named the Croat (Željko Ivanek), she is forced to reach out to Negan, the man who brutally murdered her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun), for help.

When Maggie locates Negan, he is accompanied by a young girl, Ginny (Mahina Napoleon), whom he has been taking care of. It is revealed, via a wanted poster, that Negan is a wanted man in the community of New Babylon. Maggie explains her situation to him and that she needs his help as the Croat was a former member of his Saviors. This was revealed when he used the telltale whistle used by the group.
This leads the pair to Manhattan, home of the Croat and his Burazi, who terrorize the island. The series continues as they attempt to locate and rescue Maggie's son.
The Walking Dead: Dead City is a great new series within TWDU that expands the universe to the apocalyptic streets of Manhattan, a new and exciting setting. This series also features glimpses into Maggie and Negan's lives since their last conversation in TWD. Fans of Maggie and Negan will enjoy the continued story, and fans of TWD will enjoy a fresh new installment within the same universe.

In addition to Hershel, the Croat and Ginny, several other new characters are introduced. Gaius Charles portrays Marshal Perlie Armstrong of New Babylon, and Lisa Emery plays The Dama, a leader of a gang in Manhattan.
If you have yet to watch The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1, it is streaming on Netflix. The second season of Dead City premieres on AMC and AMC+ beginning May 4 at 9 p.m. ET.
