It is difficult to fathom new theories on the undead as many movies and shows feature this theme with many variations. Examples include The Walking Dead's slow-moving walkers, World War Z's frightening fast-moving ones, Game of Thrones' intelligent Wights and White Walkers, and The Last of Us with its cordyceps in various gruesome stages. Now Lowell Dean reinvents things again in his movie Die Alone
Dean wrote Die Alone before the 2014 release of his superhero film WolfCop, but production didn't begin until a decade later. This movie isn't your typical apocalyptical story filled with the traditional tropes of the genre. Instead, Die Alone gives fans of the undead something new and unpredictable.
The movie stars Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix, Memento) and Douglas Smith (Will Trent, Superman & Lois), with a brief appearance by Frank Grillo (Werewolves, Tulsa King). They are joined by Kimberly-Sue Murray, Steven Roy, Harlan Blayne Kywayhat, Jonathan Cherry, and more.
The story features a plant-based virus that overtaken humans and follows Ethan (Smith), who has amnesia. He wakes after a car crash to discover his girlfriend Emma (Murray) is missing, with only clips of memories of what occurred. He encounters lone survivalist Mae (Moss), who agrees to help him with his survivalist skills and in finding his girlfriend. But viewers can sense there is something else going on.
The official synopsis reads: Lost in a world reclaimed by nature and overrun by mysterious creatures, a young man with amnesia teams up with an eccentric survivalist to find his missing girlfriend.
The movie has earned 75% on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving the story praise for its innovative story. The originality of the undead in his film is incredible as nature begins to reclaim and transform them into plants. The most impressive thing about the creatures, who are covered in moss, or have trees etc. growing from them, are entirely created without CGI. The story is primarily the sweet love story of Ethan and Emma, but this results in not seeing enough of these unique members of the undead.
Die Alone is currently available to stream on Tubi, a free ad-supporting streaming service or can be rented or purchased via Prime Video. Check out the official trailer below.
