Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal just made box office history at Marvel's expense

Jon Bernthal’s latest movie has officially made box office history, taking down Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine in the process.

Several The Walking Dead stars have gone on to impressive things since leaving the series, but Jon Bernthal is without a doubt having one of the best post-Walking Dead years of any cast member. This has been in large part due to the role he’s played in two of this summer’s biggest movies, which have each been enjoying historic runs.

We’re, of course, referring to Bernthal’s roles in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The two films opened roughly two weeks apart from one another this July and have each more than exceeded expectations, with moviegoers worldwide flocking to theaters to enjoy the two uniquely different but equally epic blockbusters. Both films have received strong critical and fan praise, and audiences continue to show up for the films weeks into their respective runs, helping the two films to make box office history by racing past various records.

Every time we think there is no way the films can make more history, they go and prove us wrong. The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day just keep finding ways to break records and make history at the box office, though we’re sure Marvel wasn’t exactly thrilled with the latest achievement Bernthal and The Odyssey pulled off.

The Odyssey surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie

On August 19, The Odyssey officially became the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever at the worldwide box office, overtaking Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine to take the top spot among all R-rated films. It’s a feat that many expected was in the cards given the success The Odyssey has enjoyed since its release, but it’s absolutely wild that the film has passed Deadpool & Wolverine’s global box office earnings after only about a month in theaters!

Funny enough, it was Deadpool himself who broke the news that The Odyssey had unseated Deadpool & Wolverine at the top of the leaderboard, with Ryan Reynolds taking to social media to congratulate the entire team behind the film.

“Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. That is one helluva car,” Reynolds wrote, sharing a mashup video of a pair of fight sequences from both films.

The Odyssey etched its name in the history books by passing Deadpool & Wolverine’s worldwide run of $1.33 billion, sailing past the mark at $1.352 billion on August 19. Funny enough, that number has already risen since then, with The Odyssey continuing to rake in serious cash at the box office. As of August 22, the film has already passed $1.5 billion and could very well end its run close to or past the $2 billion mark.

The film is putting some major breathing space between the rest of the Top 10, which includes all three Deadpool movies as well as Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning film, Oppenheimer

  1. The Odyssey
  2. Deadpool & Wolverine
  3. Joker
  4. Oppenheimer
  5. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle
  6. Deadpool 2
  7. Deadpool
  8. The Matrix Reloaded
  9. It
  10. Detective Chinatown 3

We’ll see where The Odyssey ends its run, and we’re certain Bernthal’s films aren’t finished making history just yet this summer, as Brand New Day is flirting with some more historic moments as its run continues to unfold as well. It’s certainly fun to see a beloved member of The Walking Dead family having such a momentous year, and The Walking Dead fandom has certainly been among those showing up for both films this summer; after all, actors’ times with the franchise might end, but the fandom’s love for them continues well beyond their final Walking Dead episodes.
