Since its inception, the Resident Evil franchise's reach has spread like an infectious virus, and 2026 has been no different. Requiem — the latest video game in Capcom's beloved saga — was met with critical acclaim due to its ability to balance claustrophobic, horror-focused levels with explosive set pieces.
Furthermore, after seven critically underwhelming adaptations, the franchise finally found success on the big screen with the release of Zach Cregger's Resident Evil (2026). Better yet, Capcom announced two imminent releases: a Resident Evil Requiem DLC and a remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica.
The upcoming horror remake was officially unveiled during Summer Game Fest 2026. While the reveal trailer didn't feature a specific release date, it did end with the reveal of a release window: 2027. Since then, multiple reports surfaced, claiming Resident Evil Veronica enjoyed an extremely smooth development cycle with no unexpected bumps.
A release in the first half of the year seemed likely for a time, but fans became a little skeptical when the upcoming title was nowhere to be seen at the Tokyo Game Show. Unfortunately, it seems our fears were confirmed, as Resident Evil Veronica may need more time in the oven than originally intended.
Resident Evil Veronica was internally delayed to Fall 2027, reports say
Industry Insider Dusk Golem revealed that Resident Evil Veronica is now aiming for a Fall 2027 release window. The source also revealed that this decision was the direct result of late development changes that weren't originally intended to be so big in scope, but that Capcom really wants to include.
Resident Evil games typically release in spring, with Requiem coming our way in February 2026, while the remakes of RE 2, 3, and 4 hit shelves during the first four months of the year. That's why it seemed extremely likely the upcoming title would keep the streak going, but this may ultimately not be the case.
Capcom has made the most of previous Tokyo Game Shows by featuring playable demos of its Resident Evil games. That's why many fans were disappointed to learn that the Code Veronica remake was nowhere to be seen at the 2026 edition of the show. Now, all eyes are on the Game Awards in December for the studio to unveil a new trailer (and, hopefully, a gameplay deep dive).
Since Capcom has never officially revealed a release date for Resident Evil Veronica, an "official" delay isn't yet in the cards unless the game gets pushed back to 2028. However, it's clear the upcoming title is still a long way off, considering its marketing campaign hasn't officially started yet.
Out of all the original Resident Evil games, Code Veronica is perhaps the one that needs the most revisiting. Its tank controls haven't aged well, and it's extremely easy to get soft-locked in it, prompting players to create multiple save files despite its relatively short 12-hour campaign. Fortunately, not only will the upcoming remake completely solve these issues, but it will also rework the story to connect the overarching narrative to the other remakes.
With a bit of luck, it won't be long before Capcom finally unveils more of its upcoming horror project and gives us a proper release date. In the meantime, we can rewatch Zach Cregger's Resident Evil or play through the remakes once again, because (almost) all of them are great.
