Apple Cider Vinegar is the latest true crime series released on Netflix. The six-part series premiered on Feb. 6 to mixed critical reviews, but viewers are excited for another scammer series.
The Australian TV drama is a limited series from See-Saw Films. It was created by award-winning Australian writer Samantha Strauss (Dance Academy, Nine Perfect Strangers) and directed by Jeffrey Walker (H2O: Just Add Water). Anya Beyersdorf and Angela Betzien co-wrote the series with Strauss and cited Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano's 2017 book The Woman Who Fooled the World as their inspiration for the story.
The series stars Kaitlyn Dever, who has been cast as Abby in the second season of The Last of Us, as con-woman Belle Gibson. Fear the Walking Dead's Alicia Debnam-Carey stars opposite Dever as Milla Blake. Other cast members include Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Mark Coles Smith, Ashley Zukerman, Susie Porter, Matt Nable, Phoenix Raei, Chai Hansen, Rick Davies, Kieran Darcy-Smith, Catherine McClements and Essie Davis.
The story, which Netflix describes as "a true story based on a lie," follows Gibson, who becomes an Australian wellness influencer who claims to have cured her cancer with alternative medicine. The con, her cancer wasn't cured by this method because she never had it. Set in the early days of Instagram, the series sheds light on how people can be significantly influenced by false information that can be found on social media, where it is often difficult to fact from fiction.
Netflix describes the series as "a true-ish story based on a lie, about the rise and fall of a wellness empire; the culture that built it up and the people who tore it down."
Apple Cider Vinegar is now streaming on Netflix.
