The Walking Dead remains one of television’s most popular and unpredictable series, known for its shocking character deaths, high-stakes drama, and its ability to constantly keep fans on the edge of their seats. Yet among all the deviations that the zombie series took from Robert Kirkman’s original comics, one change stands out as the most controversial. That's the decision to kill off Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs).

Many fans of the comics argue that this choice not only altered the story but also removed one of the most crucial characters in the series. It's a decision that people still talk about to this day even several years after the show's ending.

Carl in the comics vs. Carl in the TV show

In The Walking Dead comic series, Carl doesn't die at all. In fact, he survives into adulthood, growing from Rick Grimes’ young son into a resilient, thoughtful, and inspiring leader. Comic book Carl serves as a symbol of hope in a bleak, violent world, showing that humanity and morality can endure even in the most desperate circumstances. Readers watch him develop, make mistakes, and ultimately become a driving force for change and growth within the survivor community.

The TV show, however, made the decision to diverge drastically from the comics. After being bitten by a walker while trying to help another survivor in season 8, Carl doesn't initially tell anyone about the bite. Instead, he waits until shortly before his death to share the truth with his loved ones.

Understanding that he would soon reanimate as a walker once he dies, Carl chooses to end his own life before that can happen while lying down on the floor in an abandoned church. He ends up using his gun to shoot himself in the head as Rick and Michonne listen from outside.

Why Carl's death was the worst change

Carl’s death in the series is widely considered the worst change from the comics for several reasons. His absence disrupted storylines. In addition, his death forced the alteration of multiple character arcs. Several potential storylines from the comics that could have explored Carl’s growth and leadership were abandoned as well.

There's also the fan backlash. Fans reacted strongly. They flooded social media and forums with criticism over Carl's death. Many felt that the show sacrificed a deeply meaningful character for shock value and undermined years of emotional investment. It just didn't make sense. For a character as important as Carl, he deserved to live, grow, and continue shaping the world around him.

The show could've picked a minor character instead to create shock and drama. Sure, the zombie series had diverged from the comics many times before, but killing Carl went far beyond a simple creative change.

It removed a central figure whose presence anchored the emotional and moral core of the story. By eliminating him, the show sacrificed long-term narrative depth, altered the trajectories of key characters, and robbed viewers of the chance to see Carl grow into the inspiring leader he became in the comics. Simply, the writers were better off keeping him alive because his presence was too important to the story.

Apparently, the official reason Carl was killed off was to influence Rick’s decisions. It was to steer him toward mercy and reconciliation rather than revenge toward Negan. But I’d argue that this justification doesn’t make sense. Carl didn’t need to die to influence Rick’s decisions. His presence alone could have eventually guided Rick toward mercy.

I personally still believe that killing off Carl was just the show's way of boosting ratings and creating a shocking, emotional moment, rather than making a choice that truly served the story. But again, that's just my opinion. What many will agree on is that Carl’s death left a lasting void in the zombie series. For some viewers, it was even the final straw that made them stop watching.
