It's hard to find a zombie show scarier than The Walking Dead. Heck, it's hard to find a zombie show outside of The Walking Dead. While they certainly do exist, the classic AMC series dominated the genre on the small screen, bringing the horror of zombie flicks to TV and inspiring a movement soon afterwards. From World War Z to The Last of Us, they owe it all of the TWD franchise.
We use the word "franchise" because the TWD Universe has expanded in recent years to tell new stories focused on classic characters, with The Ones Who Live, Dead City, and Daryl Dixon all thrilling us over the past few years - keeping us entertained as the zombie TV genre slowly winds down again. And yet, there is one relatively new entry that made such an impression on viewers that the studio responsible for it made a surprise renewal - and then renewed it again and again, apparently.
Marvel Zombies returning for three annual Disney Plus specials
Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that the highly successful miniseries Marvel Zombies will return for multiple future installments. Taking to the stage at New York Comic-Con, Marvel's Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum announced that the series would return to Disney Plus annually for three specials - an announcement that was met with praise from the audience in attendance.
Marvel Zombies: The Winter Soldier will premiere on the platform in 2027, with Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu arriving in 2028, and Marvel Zombies: The Last Guardian arriving in 2029. They will be a part of Phase 7 (and likely Phase 8) of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, continuing on the story that began in the four-part miniseries that aired on the streamer back in 2025.

Marvel fans will, of course, know that the first of those will clearly focus on Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier, the second on Moon Knight (which will likely be the Blade Knight version who appeared in both Marvel Zombies and parent series What If...?), while the third would presumably be a Guardian of the Galaxy who makes it down to the last survivors of the zombie apocalypse ravaging this earth. Yep, definitely watching those!
As for what makes the Marvel Zombies franchise more terrifying than The Walking Dead franchise? Simple: The zombies actually maintain their superpowers and a semblance of who they were (albeit with their purpose distorted due to the virus coursing through their veins). The fact that it's animated allows the show to go to far more gruesome places than one might expect from a Marvel Television production.
Marvel Zombies was something of an unexpected success story for Marvel Studios. Created as a movie at first, it was eventually split into a four-part miniseries just before the studio shifted away from miniseries to ongoing television shows. However, released just ahead of the Halloween season in 2025, it became a major success for Disney Plus ahead of spooky season - prompting the studio to revisit the concept. And they did, initially renewing it for a second season before shifting gears and reimagining the renewal as multiple annual specials
So now, in 2027 we get to look forward to new episodes from the TWD Universe (as the fourth and final season The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will premiere on AMC in 2027) and a new zombie adventure set in the MCU's multiverse. Honestly, as a comic book fan and a zombie fan, you really couldn't ask for more than that!
