The Walking Dead introduced a bunch of characters throughout its 11-season run. Some you'd love instantly, others you’d love to hate, and some would leave such a lasting impact that fans still talk about them to this day.
With a story that constantly expanded across new communities, conflicts, and survivor groups, the zombie series never struggled to bring in fresh faces to keep viewers emotionally invested. However, every now and then, the show would introduce characters who didn’t just blend into the ever-growing roster of survivors. They would completely alter the trajectory of the story.
12 years ago, the show delivered one of its most memorable character debuts, bringing in three survivors whose arrival would forever reshape the emotional and narrative landscape of the apocalypse.
February 16 marks 12 years since Rosita, Abraham, and Eugene debuted on TWD

On Feb. 16, 2014, AMC aired the tenth episode of the fourth season titled "Inmates." With it currently being Feb. 16, 2026, today is the 12-year anniversary. This episode marked the first appearance of Abraham Ford, Eugene Porter, and Rosita Espinosa. They were three strangers traveling together with a shared mission that immediately separated them from nearly every other group viewers had encountered.
Their arrival came during one of the most emotionally devastating points in the series. At this stage in the show, Rick's group was broken, mourning losses, and struggling to rebuild any sense of normalcy after the fall of the prison. The apocalypse had worn them down physically, mentally, and emotionally, leaving the group vulnerable to new threats both human and undead.
They were all scattered across the U.S. as well. You had Rick and Carl together navigating constant danger, Michonne carrying the weight of grief and isolation, and the remaining members of the group struggling to find one another while fending off relentless walkers. We don't actually meet Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita until the very end of the episode.
Following several tense events, the show sets the stage for their unforgettable introduction. After Glenn collapses from exhaustion during a walker attack, leaving Tara to fend for herself, a military-style truck suddenly rolls up. The camera carefully frames the scene, building suspense before the trio steps out of the vehicle.

Abraham strides forward first. His confident posture, deliberate movements, and commanding presence instantly mark him as a natural leader. Even before he speaks, the show communicates that he’s someone who commands respect and expects others to follow. Rosita steps out alongside Abraham, her calm, composed demeanor contrasting slightly with his intensity.
Then, there's Eugene, who emerges slightly behind the other two. From his movements, it’s immediately clear that he is less physically imposing and more cautious. Comic book readers would recognize them right away, but even those who didn't read the comics could tell that the trio would eventually become important to the story. While their introduction is brief, it left fans eager to see the next episode.
We would find out just an episode later what Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene's mission was all about. They were on a journey to escort Eugene to Washington, D.C., because he claimed to be a scientist with knowledge that could help end the walker epidemic. Of course, we'd find out later that Eugene’s claim was far from the truth. He wasn’t actually a scientist, nor did he possess any cure for the walker outbreak. Instead, he had fabricated the story as a desperate survival strategy.
Sadly, Abraham would meet a tragic end in the season 7 premiere and Rosita in the series finale. Eugene, however, would defy expectations and end the series married and with a child. Although it's been several years since The Walking Dead ended its run, the legacy of Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene lives on. Their introduction not only shook up the dynamics of Rick’s group, but it also left a lasting mark on the series as a whole.
RIP Abraham and Rosita, and hope to see you soon, Eugene, in a potential Walking Dead spinoff!
