Zombie horror continues to be one of the most enduring genres in film and television, and 2026 is set to deliver two new notable additions for fans of the undead. While the genre has seen countless variations over the years, these upcoming releases each bring something distinct to the table.
On one side, there’s Colony, a Korean zombie thriller from acclaimed filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho. On the other, there’s Resident Evil, a full franchise reboot that aims to take the iconic video game series back to its survival horror roots. While both films approach the zombie concept in very different ways, they share a common focus on isolation, survival, and escalating danger.

Colony is set for a theatrical release in the U.S. in August 2026
As mentioned earlier, Colony comes from Yeon Sang-ho. He directed the zombie flick as well as co-wrote the script with Choi Gyu-seok. Sang-ho is best known for being behind other popular zombie movies such as Train to Busan and Peninsula. In addition, he and Gyu-seok previously worked together on the Netflix mystery thriller film Revelations.
In Colony, the story unfolds at a biotech conference that takes a devastating turn after a dangerous virus is accidentally released. What should have been a controlled environment then quickly becomes a containment nightmare, as the facility is locked down and everyone inside is trapped with no way out.
As the infection spreads, the situation becomes increasingly unstable. The virus does not behave in a predictable way. Instead, it begins to show signs of rapid mutation, which leads to evolving forms of the infected. This, of course, adds an extra layer of tension to the film, as survivors are forced to constantly adapt to a threat that is changing in real time.
The Colony cast is made up of amazingly talented South Korean actors such as Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Kim Shin-rok, Shin Hyun-been, and Go Soo. Additionally, zombie fans can catch this movie in U.S. theaters starting on Friday, Aug. 28, 2026!
Resident Evil is slated to hit theaters in September 2026
If Colony represents the evolution of zombie storytelling, Resident Evil represents its reinvention.
Directed by Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian), this new Resident Evil movie serves as the second reboot of the Resident Evil film series. It's completely separate from previous movie adaptations. Instead of continuing familiar storylines or returning to iconic characters like Leon or Jill, this version introduces a brand-new narrative rooted in the original game universe but told through a fresh perspective.
The film follows a medical courier named Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, who is sent on what should be a routine delivery to a remote medical facility. But almost immediately, things spiral out of control when a viral outbreak erupts in the area. All of a sudden, the surrounding population turns into aggressive, mutated infected creatures. Bryan then finds himself trapped in a deadly survival situation.
Joining Abrams in the Resident Evil cast are Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, and Johnno Wilson. In addition, the film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Friday, Sept. 18, 2026!
Overall, Colony and Resident Evil are definitely two upcoming movie releases worth keeping an eye on if you're a zombie fan. August and September might seem far away right now, but the wait could easily pay off when they finally arrive!
