The Walking Dead: Let’s Talk Walkers! (Part 3)
By Susie Graham
So far we’ve talked about the general rules for walkers, the variety of names, a few questions and possible answers, zombie school and walker movements. Let’s talk kills! Click here if youd like to catch up on Part 1 or Part 2. Okay, off to kill some walkers!
Walker kills are cool because they are simple. Just like the names the walkers have are simple and cool! And they’re walkers! They’re not people; that’s another story when the people are killed. With the walkers we can “enjoy” the disgustingness of the guts. Every season they get more creative, yet the elegant simplicity remains. This from a woman who has hated gore and horror movies her whole life and walked out of Gangs of New York because it was too violent. I still squinch my eyes and look through my fingers at times, but I love me some walker kills now.
I won’t be able to hit all the great ones, Im sure I’ll miss some, but that’s for you to discuss in the comments! There are the simple gunshots. These are good for fast kills and especially for walkers we knew when living like Amy or Lori or Sophia. We have knives and arrows for fast, quiet kills. We have the creative hand/body/elements kills when that’s all that’s available: kicking, stomping, banging against walls or trees or the ground, closing in a car door. These are pretty gruesome and take some time. I’m thinking a good example would be Tdog and the well walker, The Governor in the pit and most recently, Rick with his bare hands. We have the garden tools, and other tool killings like shovels and hammers. The farm had some good ones and of course, Tyreese had his hammer. Then some creative tools like Stop signs and license plates. And then we have some really creative kills with fire and flares.
The few that really stand out to me as WOW killings are two of Daryl’s, and one Michonne’s. The first of Daryl’s was more because he was in such danger ( I know that’s another whole article of the show always scaring us into thinking Daryl will die.), and wasnt really a walker kill, but a kill with a walker. He used the head of a walker, with his fingers in its eyes like a bowling ball to get himself out of danger. The next was quick and very “whoa, cool!” when it happened. It was the triple beheading of the walkers between the trucks in the season five finale with a chain like the flick of a matador’s cape.
Michonne’s kill stands out as the most creative kill in my mind because it took time for her to think of it because she was tied to a post and her hand were tied like handcuffs by Merle who was busy hot wiring a car a killing more walkers drawn to the car alarm sound that he now had going off calling all walkers out of their naps. Michonne managed to walk herself around the post and around the girl walker and get the rope around the walkers neck and pull. Snap. Goosh. Spurt. Decapitated walker girl.
What are some of your favorite walker kills? Do you like the creativity of the kills? Trivia fun: I’ve heard that the walkers eat lunch on set together. They’re like their own little walker family.
