The Walking Dead comic books have been building up to a huge confrontation.  Issue #143 hinted at what could be in store for the future of the Grimes family and his community, but it had absolutely no way to prepare readers for what happened in #144.

Previously, there had been some problems in the Grimes family.  Specifically, Rick and Carl seemed to hit a point in their relationship that we saw Carl walking with Lydia away from Alexandria.  In addition, tension was growing with The Whisperers and Alpha and it seemed to hit a boiling point leading into this month’s issue.

Today, issue #144 hit newsstands and things will never be the same again in The Walking Dead comic book universe.

***WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ISSUE #144 BELOW***

There were some major character deaths in this issue.  Alpha created a border line between the territory for The Whisperers and the land for Alexandria.  Sadly, this wasn’t a line or fence, but instead the land was marked off by heads of the Whisperer’s victims that were impaled on a post.

Yes, the head in the middle belongs to Rosita.  She is a regular on AMC’s The Walking Dead and has become a fan favorite in the comics after forming a relationship with Eugene.  It was made even more difficult since Rosita had just recently learned that she was pregnant.  But that wasn’t the only shocking discovery.  In addition to Rosita’s head was one that caught me off guard.

The head on the right that has everyone in shock belongs to Ezekiel.  In the past, he has been romantically linked to Michonne and formerly had a pet tiger named Shiva.  He was the leader of The Kingdom and was well-liked by many of the characters in the comic books.

Also included in the big line of deaths was Olivia from Alexandria, who wasn’t a major player in The Walking Dead’s comics but still will have an impact on the books.  There were also a large number of other unnamed deaths that I’m sure will be mentioned in future issues.

All this should lead up to a huge confrontation between the group that Rick Grimes leads and The Whisperers.  With how intense things are getting between the two groups, The Walking Dead comic book series will eventually have an explosive conclusion to this feud.  And if all these deaths are just leading up to the final showdown, there should be some great things in store in The Walking Dead’s future.

Issue #145 of The Walking Dead is scheduled to be released on August 12, 2015.  It’s going to be one heck of a wait until then.
