The Walking Dead Trailers: Masters of Thrills and Misdirection

The Walking Dead knows how to build excitement for a season. When it comes to answering questions about upcoming events, or hints for the characters, actors, directors and producers are masters of vaguery, cryptic answers, sly glances and evil smirks. Yet somehow they can evoke tension and goosebumps without revealing a thing. Using words like intense and mind-blowing. Or telling us they reinvent themselves every eight episodes so it’s a Walking Dead we’ve never seen before. Of course, all those things are true, but they tell us nothing, yet are thrilling at the same time.

The excitement this summer started with the Comic Con banner. Our family lined up. Were they taking sides? Whoa! Michael Cudlitz talking to us from the set! Not just a poster–a talkie! This week we saw different poster art each day, starting with Stephen Vining’s walker facing Rick. Chills! Morgan, Michonne. Daryl. A black and white walker jaw announcing the trailer. More chills!

And today we wait to see the trailer so we can watch it over and over and over to make predictions. To stop ourselves from making predictions. To have our muscles shaking and twitching with the thrill of brand new footage from our family.

Take a look back at this video to remember the feeling we had last year at this time when the Season Five trailer was released. Watch the editing and clever misdirection along with the thrills, chills and goosebumps you still get even after knowing what transpired last season.

Update: Whoa! Now we have seen the trailer for Season 6 and Scott Gimple has confirmed that they do, indeed, “play with the truth“, in trailers. It is so exciting! They do know how to edit and how to induce chills and thrills! How many times have you watched the trailer?
