The Walking Dead: Could there be a Father Gabriel flashback?
By Susie Graham
Scott Gimple revealed at Comic-Con that there will be flashbacks in season 6 of The Walking Dead. Could there be a flashback to Father Gabriel when his flock came calling? That’s a short flashback I’m hoping to see.
The padre’s version of the story--I always lock the doors!— seemed to allow the group to accept him, at the time, after his confession, at least knowing now what someone thought he would burn for, and what he seemed to be hiding.
And the group’s acceptance of him motivated Eugene to later come clean with his own confession. But fans have never been kind about poor Gabe!
I always lock the doors at night, you see. I always lock the doors.
I’ve written about him several times. I’m pretty sure I’m the only one on the planet who feels sorry for him. I don’t know where the writers are going with his character. They’ve obviously set him up to be disliked and to be seen as a coward, and most recently a betrayer.
But they are the writers. A flashback to the scene at the church when he kept the doors locked might be just what fans need to see what happened, and feel what happened. Not just imagine or hear about it.
The one declarative sentence–he locked out his congregation–is pretty damning. But seeing how it happened might shed some different light.
We’ve seen many situations in this apocalyptic world where the survivors have had to make decisions to allow people to perish because there’s nothing they can do to help them at that time–it’s just too late and they are not equipped to help.
The trio on their road trip in Clear left orange backpack guy without a thought, even picking up his orange backpack on the return trip.
I know nobody is going to agree with me here, but I’m still rooting for a mind-changing Father Gabriel flashback in season 6.
If you’re still here and not cursing at the screen, maybe you’d like to read more of my thoughts about Father Gabriel. Don’t throw your phone and break it or anything. Phones are expensive and you don’t even know me. I’m really a nice person. I’m a Walking Dead fan, for goodness sake!
