The Walking Dead released issue 166 of the comic book series titled ‘No Surrender’ on April 5, 2017. It is strongly advised that you NOT read this recap unless you are caught up through the events leading up to this issue!

Issue 166 opens with Andrea talking about the wound on her neck. Despite acknowledging the injury, she insists the team go on to ride the coast in order to push the horde of walkers into the ocean.

Back in Alexandria, Rick is shooting walkers. Negan is acting as a shield for Rick, taking out any of the undead that get close. Eventually, they meet up with Vincent and others now that the town looks to be clear.

Rick praises their good work while Negan scoffs at their efforts. The next move is to start clearing toward the gates of the community. They start the effort and meet up with Carl, who was doing the same thing from the other side.

Carl and Rick share a big hug, but the news of The Hilltop being burned to the ground disheartens Rick. Lydia says Rick should be proud of the way Carl rallied everyone to action, while Negan wants to get back to taking out the zombies around the gate.

At that moment, a storm of bullets rain through the undead. It is The Saviors. With Dwight and Heath as a hostages and Sherry at the lead, they order the Alexandrians to put their weapons down.

Sherry says that they’re breaking away from the group and are no longer happy being part of their ‘little club’. She states that they don’t need the other communities and don’t even want to be with them.

Rick asks her if she watched the entire time they struggled with the undead and if she realizes just what she is doing. John says that they don’t want to be a part of their world anymore, and that they don’t need to be.

In the middle of the conversation, Sherry stops. She spots Negan in Alexandria. Negan offers a greeting and says that he has missed them. This distraction was what Dwight needed to take the gun from the man holding him hostage, and the other Alexandrians followed suit.

By now, the rest of the survivors have their weapons pointed directly at the The Saviors. There is a standoff, with both sides exchanging words about their firepower and capabilities.

Dwight says he wants to handle the situation, but Rick instead takes control. He orders his people to lower their weapons, which Dwight says is a mistake since ‘these people’ can’t be trusted. Eventually, Rick is able to talk Dwight into lowering his gun.

Looking unimpressed, Sherry goes into Rick’s house to discuss what is happening. He offers her some tea, which she refuses. He says he can forgive that some of his people are injured because of her group, but he can’t forget that they just watched as they struggled with the walkers and asks her what she wants.

Sherry replies that they want out. They don’t want to be part of the group. They want to work to keep their own resources and rule themselves. And she says that they might like to live in a community rather than a dirty old factory.

Surprised by the threat, Rick sees what he is dealing with. He says they offer security and structure, to which Sherry replies that she has heard that before…with Negan…and asks why he is there fighting with them.

In that moment, Sherry flips the table and says she won’t be intimidated. She says she’s not a scared woman who will be intimidated into surrendering just because they talk in a one-on-one situation.

She asks Rick why he isn’t scared to be face-to-face with him, to which he replied that he thought she was sane. This sets Sherry off, as she describes some of the horrible things she has done to survive in the zombie apocalypse and how insanity is just falling in line under someone else’s rule without question as she slaps Rick across the face twice before he catches her arm.

Sherry says she could kill Rick right now and John could mow down the people of Alexandria and they could take the community by force. Knocking Rick to the ground and diving on him, she positioned her knife above him and said the world would be better without him.

With a kick to the chest, he gains separation and gets back to his feet. He asks her if she has lost her mind. She says the fact he thinks she is crazy justifies her actions, diving at him with her knife only to be blocked by his metal hand.

Once again, she takes him to the ground. This time, she is choking him with her bare hands and saying that ‘Rick Grimes dies today’. Losing consciousness, Rick pushes Sherry, and she hits her head on the table.

Blood is flowing from her head and she doesn’t respond to his attempts to talk to her. With her blood now on his hands, Andrea enters the room, shocked by what she sees.

Rick explains that it was an accident. Andrea walks toward Rick, but collapses. She apologizes and says she lost her balance. He asks if she is okay, and she reveals the wound on her neck to Rick.
