Issue 175 of The Walking Dead surprised fans with The Commonwealth and the start of New World Order, but it was Michonne got the biggest shock of all.
The Walking Dead promoted issue 175 like many of the others at the start of a new story arc. There was a new group of survivors who were either friends or foes and comic readers had to decide whether they were good people or not.
While that was all happening and the scope of the introduction of The Commonwealth was massive, there was one thing that overshadowed the entire comic and was revealed at the very end.
Michonne was part of the group that went to Ohio to meet up with the group Eugene was talking to on the radio. Instead, they met Lance Hornsby and The Commonwealth, who took their information and escorted them toward their community.
Along the way, they passed a stadium for sports and concerts as well as a billboard with photos and letters plastered all over it. The group stopped to check out this ‘Wall of the Lost’, where people leave messages for lost loved ones in hope of finding them again.
It was one picture in particular that changed Michonne’s world forever.
Apparently, Michonne has a daughter named Elodie that we haven’t heard of before issue 175. This is the first shocking news but add in that Elodie may still be alive and be looking for her mother gives readers a very interesting development.
According to the post, Elodie is at a bakery on 6th Street. That sounds like normal directions until you realize that this is the zombie apocalypse and bakeries, as well as maintained streets, are something extremely rare and even unthought of.
Michonne’s response to the poster was as expected since she was overcome with emotion and broke down into tears to end the issue.
This sets up what could be either a heartwarming reunion between mother and daughter or a situation where Michonne gets her hopes up only to find out that she is too late in getting to Elodie.
Either way, this will be a major story to watch as the story in the New World Order arc of the comics and readers learn more about The Commonwealth.
