What does the introduction of Elodie mean for The Walking Dead comics?
By Adam Carlson
The introduction of Elodie in issue 176 of The Walking Dead comics marks a huge shift in the dynamic of the survivors and empowers The Commonwealth.
The Walking Dead comics have been moving along at a breakneck pace and giving readers a lot to digest in an exceptionally short period of time, but nothing may have made as big of an impact as issue 176.
In the issue titled ‘New World Order Part 2 of 6’ on February 7, 2018, Michonne entered The Commonwealth with the other people traveling from Alexandria to meet up with the people from the group Eugene was talking with on the radio.
Last month, the big cliffhanger of the issue involved Michonne discovering that her daughter Elodie had made a posting on the “Wall of the Lost” featuring a photo of the sword-swinging survivor telling that she would be at the bakery.
Usually, comics take a little while to give a payout to those kinds of stories. However, Robert Kirkman’s story moved the story headed quickly and actually delivered the mother-daughter reunion in the February 2018 issue.
On the surface, this is a beautiful reunion. However, this also means that Michonne is now essentially tied to The Commonwealth and readers can’t be sure just what Elodie’s situation in the community is.
Odds are that Michonne will now not leave The Commonwealth without Elodie. And is likely that Elodie will not be allowed to leave the massive community in concerns of her death and losing a baker in their settlement.

Interestingly enough, this would leave Magna, Yumiko, Eugene, Siddiq, and Princess as the group returning to Alexandria to talk to Rick Grimes and explain the situation. However, there is a way to avoid this as well.
Stephanie’s radio had previously been used to talk to Eugene, but it could be used to communicate with Rick at Alexandria. But it may be difficult for Rick to trust everything he hears over the radio and want to evaluate the situation face-to-face.
The trust that Rick has in Michonne could be key in creating trust and forming a bond between the two communities. Having Elodie as that bridge was a great way to create an immediate and powerful situation that will need to be discussed for many, many issues to come.
