Season 8 was a game changer for The Walking Dead. Let’s take a walk down memory lane with a look back at episode 801, “Mercy.”

The season 8 premiere of The Walking Dead was a game changer as Rick and the other communities banded together to wage a massive attack on Negan and the Saviors. After spending much of season 7 under Negan’s thumb, Alexandria, the Hilltop and the Kingdom decide to fight back. Greg Nicotero directed this supersized season premiere and it was nonstop action from start to finish. Rick and his group planned and implemented a massive, unrelenting assault on the Saviors.

If you need a refresher, take a look at the synopsis of “Mercy” from AMC: “Rick and his group, along with the Kingdom and Hilltop, have banded together to bring the fight to Negan and the Saviors.” You can read more about the synopsis right here.

The season 8 premiere was special for a number of reasons, but looking back through the lens that hindsight offers, one of the most important scenes was when Carl Grimes went on a supply run. The scene was a shot-for-shot remake of a scene from The Walking Dead’s first season, where Rick was out looking for supplies. This is an especially touching moment given what comes later on in season 8.

“Mercy” was the first time that fans saw Negan in a weak position. After the Sanctuary came under attack, Negan’s people were stuck with nowhere to go, and this set up the rest of 8A as All Out War raged on.

The Walking Dead season 8 continues on February 25.
